It was literally a one-man operation. ‘No apprentices, no receptionist, not even an answering machine’ says owner Stavros Tavrou of the first day at Rakis. ‘If the phone rang mid-haircut I’d have to scoot over on my stool. I used to take the phone off the hook when I went out to get lunch just so people would think we were really busy.’ That was 1983. By 1984 he was being invited to style U2. ‘At their hotel room, with Bono leaning over the bathtub as we rinsed out his colour – it was a surreal moment.’

So what happened in between? ‘We grew entirely by word-of-mouth,’ says Stavros. ‘And I think it’s because we’ve always had a culture here where we really desire to exceed expectations – from the cut to the colour, to the entire Rakis experience. We’ve never taken our clients for granted.’ The Rakis resume is eclectic, to say the least. In its 25-year history, they’ve amassed over 100 business and industry awards, a clientele that ranges from politicians to celebrities, and appeared in dozens of magazines from Marie Claire to Vogue. They’ve been recognized by readers of The Age for cutting the best bobs in the biz, worked for shows as diverse as Giorgio Armani, Cartier, Gucci, L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and Oakley, styled for film and television, and created an eclectic range of looks for their diverse range of clients.
