| Yandeyarra RCS is situated within the Mugurinya Aboriginal Community on a working cattle station (Yandeyarra Station), 1500 kms from Perth and 146kms south-west of Port Hedland along the Gt Northern Highway. The last 46kms of the road into the community is unsealed. The community is located on the banks of the Yule River which during the wet season often floods and isolates the community. The surrounding landscape is spectacular - spinifex plains, amazing rock and range formations, tree-lined river scenery, water holes and gorges. The community itself has a very rich traditional and modern Aboriginal history. The student population, K to 12, is 100% Aboriginal and are a very contented but proud group of young people. All the students and community members are either ESL or ESD speakers, many speaking Aboriginal English and a mother language in the home. The community supports three different language groups - Nymamal, Nyangumarta and Kariyarra. The most often spoken language, Nyangumarta, is taught in the school's LOTE program. The well maintained and resourced school consists of 5 main classroom buildings, an administration block and buildings to support the vocational education program. The many trees planted around the school grounds have a great cooling effect particularly during summer. The teachers' houses immediately surround the school complex. Literacy, Numeracy and Student Attendance and Participation are the main foci programs. This year the whole school has been involved in implementing the mandated Aboriginal Literacy Strategy with excellent results. Strategies are in place to promote positive outcomes and encourage and maintain student attendance and participation across all year levels. These include classroom and whole school attendance incentives, Breakfast and Fruit for Recess Program, Active After-school Communities sports program (funded by Australian Sports Commission), Camps, excursions and incursions. Students who are in the community generally attend school on a regular basis. There are very few discipline problems in the school and any problems that do arise are usually of a minor nature. The school has a great rapport with the community. We endeavour to employ local people for jobs that arise within the school. The school is regularly used for meetings of all types. Yandeyarra is a great place to live and there are generally very few difficulties associated with living in a remote Aboriginal community. Through sound planning, the implementation of effective teaching and learning strategies and the development of a trusting, supportive and contributing community and the professionalism of a committed staff, our school can feel satisfied that we are working towards achieving the very best for our students. | ||
