Wangkatjungka is a Remote Community School with students ranging from K to year 11. It is located 110kms from Fitzroy Crossing on the northern edge of the Great Sandy Desert. The School reflects the language group of the Indigenous owners and its geographical position. The weather is both dramatic and spectacular. Located at Wangkatjungka, on Christmas Creek Station, the school sits within an broader area controlled by the Kurungal Council which represents 5 different communities (Kupartiya, Mt Pierre, Mingalkala, Bowrooga and Ngumpan). These communities send their children to school each day on two separate buses.

The school recognises its students as ESL learners and is constanly looking to adopt best practice in ESL methodology. Through its LOTE program it gives the students the opportunity to learn either Walmajarri or Wangkatjungka.
The school actively recruits and supports Aboriginal people working in the school in both a teaching and non teaching capacity.

The process of reporting to parents is currently under review. The use of portfolios has allowed caregivers to see educational gains made by their children.

The School Council has been formed and is coming to terms with their role in the education of students in the school.

The school has a major focus on literacy through the ALS, numeracy, health and wellbeing and key areas as outlined in the Aboriginal Education Operation Plan.

The school will start 2005 with an enrolment of 65 primary and 25 secondary students. There will be 5 primary classes, and a high school class. The staff are a pedominantly young, dedicated and keen to try programs both in and out of the school that have positive educational outcomes for their students.

2005 will be a challenging year for the school as we strive to integrate the school plan with the community development plan to achieve optimal outcomes for all.
