| SCHOOL OVERVIEW Spencer Park Education Support Centre is a dynamic government school in the Albany District that provides intensive, individualised, small group and integrated instruction for students with intellectual disabilities in Years One to Seven. The Centre caters for 17 students, five of whom have severe intellectual disabilities. Students enrolled at the Centre are integrated into mainstream classes depending on their individual programs, their behaviours and the levels of support necessary for integration to be successfully managed. Currently their are 7 students fully intergrated into Spencer Park Primary School, our partner school. Each student has an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) that is developed in partnership between the Centre and primary staff, the parents, and other agencies such as therapy services. Each IEP is regularly reviewed and modified to meet the student's changing needs. Some students also have an individualised behaviour management plan so that specific behavioural concerns can be addressed and the use of more appropriate behaviours can be encouraged. To facilitate the integration process, the Centre provides a component of its staffing to the primary school to reduce class sizes. In addition, the Centre's teachers take on support duties across the school to assist with the integration of education support students into mainstream classes. Approaches such as team-teaching and small group work are provided in collaboration with the mainstream teachers. STAFFING PROFILE The staff at the Centre consists of a Principal, three Teachers, 15 Education Assistants and a Registrar. All Centre staff are encouraged to develop their skills and knowledge of sound curriculum and social programs through the performance management process. A school psychologist from the district office supports the Centre. SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE CENTRE The Child and Adolescent Integrated Therapy Service provide speech, occupational and physiotherapy services to the Centre. This service provides individual student assessment, program development and review, and teacher support for the implementation of programs. The therapy needs of the students are met by a number of programs at the Centre including an individualised speech and oral language program, a hydrotherapy program, fine and gross motor programs and Riding for the Disabled. The students with high needs also attend a special Physical Education Program at the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre one day a fortnight. Cross-curricular programs provide students with the opportunity to develop and practice functional skills from a number of learning areas in real-life settings. The inclusion of community-based activities and recreational programs are integral to the Centre's teaching and learning programs. The development of new recreational skills assists in increasing student participation in community activities. Programs provided this year include: sensory cooking, shopping, developmental play, community visits and music. SCHOOL DECISION-MAKING AND CONSULTATION PROCESSES As a shared Campus, the Centre and primary school share a P&C and Aboriginal Parent Support Group. The Centre has its own School Council that is consulted about issues that affect the Centre and the students. The Principal's duties on various joint committees are shared between the primary and education support Principals. The Council has been consulted on installing the new playground equipment with funds from 'Investing in Our Schools' from the Federal Government and redevelopment of the schools playground. It will include equipment that can be accessed by students in wheelchairs. | ||||
