| The South East Metropolitan Language Development Centre provides a full time supportive educational placement for children from Kindergarten to year 3 who have primary language disorders or difficulties. Our very committed staff provide specialised language and academic intervention on an individual and small group basis. The program caters for 185 students who have been identified as having at least average intelligence but whose academic and social performance is seriously limited by disordered speech and language. The Language Centre accepts students from the Canning Education District which extends from Serpentine to the Swan River and the hills area to Maida Vale Rd. We are located over three sites where we share facilities with local primary schools enabling children from the Language Centre to integrate with the primary school children for play, sporting events, assemblies and other activities. We share a 7 hectare site with Belmay Primary School in Cloverdale, where we have a six classroom cluster building for children from years 1 - 3, two pre-primary classes, a kindergarten and an administration area. Three classrooms for children from years 1 -3 and a pre-primary class are located at Kingsley Primary School in Armadale. Beginning in 2005, a year 1 class, a pre-primary and a kindergarten will be located at East Maddington Primary School. The administration for the Language Centre is located at the Cloverdale site and admin staff visit the Armadale and Maddington sites on a regular basis. The children are transported to the school through the W. A. Government Department of Transport bus services. The Language Centre is staffed by experienced and trained speech and language teachers who continue to update their skills through an ongoing series of relevant professional development. The LDC employs 2 Speech Pathologists who work with parents and teachers in assessing, evaluating and planning appropriate programs for the students. They also work in the classrooms with small groups or individuals to ensure an ongoing program that maximises opportunities for the development of every child. All staff members are very committed to improving outcomes for the children in our care. Staff work as a team and there is a high level of collaboration. As well as a continuing focus on the development of all language skills, the Centre's priorities for 2005 include Reading, Social Skills and Mathematics. The small class sizes allow for individualised and small group instruction. Specialist programs include art, music, physical education and computer. Communication between the school, community and students is maintained through active involvement of all stakeholders. Mediums of communication include newsletters, parent workshops, communication books, portfolios, reports and parent involvement in school activities. The school is supported by an active P&C that meets each month and a School Council that meets every term.
