| South Bunbury Education Support Centre implements educational programs for students of primary school age (6-12 years) with intellectual disabilities and special educational needs including Down syndrome, pervasive developmental delay and autism. Our current enrolment is 30 students. Our students share the campus with the students of South Bunbury Primary School and integrate with their peers both in the playground, classrooms, assembly, sports days and other special events. An effective and harmonious working partnership operates between the two schools. A special feature of South Bunbury ESC is the welcoming and vibrant atmosphere of the Centre. All staff and school community members strongly believe that every child can learn and that it is our responsibility to maximize their learning opportunities and achievements to enable them to make a positive contribution to the wider community in adult life. All students have an Individual Education Plan which is developed collaboratively by teachers, parents and other professionals. These detail the priority learning outcomes for each individual and are integrated into class teaching and learning programs in the eight learning areas. Parents are a highly valued part of our school community and excellent parent-school support is enjoyed through the open door communication policy. The Centre staff also welcomes opportunities to show prospective families and staff around the campus. Priorities this year reflect a strong emphasis on showing respect and concern for one another and valuing diversity. This includes the teaching of appropriate social skills, protective behaviours and independent living skills including an understanding of the power of choice and how their choices dictate the consequences. Functional literacy and numeracy skills are an ongoing priority area. Specialised programs like TEACCH (structured independent learning) and PECS (an expressive communication system) are implemented as needed. A wide range of Information Technology is utilized at South Bunbury ESC which is part of the 100schools project. All students have access to computers and the internet and use it according to their individual ability. Digital cameras are used extensively to support classroom programs and for reporting purposes. Continuous gradual improvement is what we aim for and It is very rewarding when students exceed our already high expectations! | ||||
