| School Community South Ballajura Education Support Centre is a purpose built facility, co-located within South Ballajura Primary School, at the southern end of the suburb of Ballajura. As a Central Department of Education and Training Resource for students with intellectual disability, student intake reaches beyond Ballajura to neighbouring suburbs of Beechboro, Dianella, Mirrabooka, Alexander Heights and Landsdale. A limited bus service is available. Since opening in 1994, the Centre has maintained an enrolment of 25-40 students. Currently there are 4 classes of up to 10 students in years one to six and a newly formed Early Intensive Intervention Program for Kindy and Pre-Primary students (maximum of 6 per group) for students with Autism and/or Global Developmental Delay. This program is based on Applied Behaviour Analysis principles and is designed to equip students with the skills required to successfully commence the formal years of schooling. Inclusive Practices Our motto is 'T.E.A.M. = Together Everyone Achieves More'. South Ballajura ESC and Primary School are committed to providing quality inclusive educational opportunities and a caring and supportive campus community. Team-teaching and co-teaching models enable staff to collaboratively plan quality learning experiences that meet the needs of, and benefit, all students. Centre staff implement and co-ordinate successful inclusive initiatives such as * Virtues Awards and Sign of the Week * Signing Club * Buddy Club Learning Programs SBESC embraces the Curriculum Framework Outcomes and Values alongside our partner primary school. Whilst a breadth and depth of Curriculum is covered, priorities are emphasised for Centre students based on individual needs and parental priorities. Consequently, there is an overall focus on communication, numeracy and social skills. Excellence in education at SBESC is achieved in a variety of ways. ESC staff are trained and skilled in tailoring and delivering a customised educational program that targets individual needs in the context of inclusive small group instruction. Learning programs and assessment are both comprehensive and relevant. All students have an Individual Education Plan developed in collaboration with parents/carers, therapists and relevant agencies. Extensive provision is made for students requiring augmentative communication systems. Community Access Programs - Students are provided with a variety of settings over the year in which to generalise the social and academic skills taught in classrooms. These integrated programs cover all eight of the Learning Areas Curriculum Framework. Learning Activities are structured and outcomes reported to parents. In addition to the vital literacy, numeracy and social skills, students require the ability to think and problem-solve. To achieve this, the Centre framework utilises De Bono's 6 Thinking Hats framework. Students benefit from specialist programs in Physical Education, Art, Music, Languages (Auslan/Indonesian) and computer. Information and Communication Technology, such as Smartboards, Intellikeys and digital technologies are utilized to motivate students and enhance learning programs. Pastoral Care SBESC achieved formal accreditation as a 'Safe School, Friendly School' by the Swan District Education Office in 2002, and became an 'Asthma Friendly School' in 2006. In addition to joint Primary and Education Support Centre policies and practices in relation to behaviour management and reward systems, the Centre ensures that our Safe and Friendly Resiliency program includes Protective Behaviours, social skills, thinking and problem-solving strategies and self-esteem which are explicitly taught and frequently reinforced. Parents as Partners T.E.A.M. = Together Everyone Achieves More Parents are encouraged to be involved in their child's education through: * Individual Education Plan Meetings * Case Conferences * Learning Journeys * Mid Year Reporting Interviews * Communication Books * Parent Information Sessions ESC parents also have their own School Council as a forum to address education issues relevant to students with an intellectual disability. An enthusiastic combined campus Parent and Citizen Association operates to support the needs of all campus students in relation to fundraising, canteen and uniform shop. | ||||
