| The Schools of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) is the centre for distance learning within the Department of Education and Training. The Schools of Isolated and Distance Education are located on six campuses. In addition to the Primary (Kindergarten - Year 7), Middle (Years 8-10) and Post Compulsory (Years 11-12) Schools on the Leederville site, there are five Schools of the Air located at Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland, Meekatharra, Carnarvon and Derby (Kimberley). SIDE is led by the Director of Isolated and Distance Education who manages the six campuses, including the Indian Ocean Territory schools, with a team of principals and managers. The Schools have a large and diverse student population. These include: - full time students unable to attend a local school due to geographical isolation - WA students travelling Australia or the world, on a long term basis, with their parents - WA students who are temporarily living overseas - WA students whose local high school does not offer the subjects they wish to study, or where the timetable does not allow them to join the class. - students suffering from a long-term illness - adults undertaking courses on a part time basis to improve their education and employment options SIDE Primary School (Kindergarten - Year 7) Leederville caters for a broad range of Kindergarten to Year Seven students in a home-based learning environment. Enrolments are typically permanent WA students who are: - travelling within Australia or around the world and are eligible to enrol if such travel is at least one semester or longer; - temporarily residing overseas with the intention of returning to WA, but are unable to access an English-speaking school; - geographically isolated from mainstream schools in the south-west of WA; or - referred to SIDE because of illness, disability or behavioural reasons. The distinctive feature of primary education in the distance mode is the involvement of the students' parents in the daily learning program and the close relationship with the SIDE teacher. Each child's learning program is tailored to meet individual needs. Students in the Primary School work across the eight Learning Areas as described in the Curriculum Framework. Languages other than English (LOTE) are offered from Year Three onwards. Over two hundred students, approximately one hundred home tutors and fourteen SIDE staff comprise this most diverse of schools. The Middle School of Isolated and Distance Education focuses on the needs of Western Australian students, living in the State or overseas, who are unable to access an educational program in a regular school for reasons such as isolation, travelling, health and special exceptions. The students in the Middle School (Years 8-10) work across the eight Learning Areas described in the Curriculum Framework. The four Learning Communities within the Middle School apply effective Middle Schooling practices suited to our students' individual needs. Each Learning Community supports students through a Student Coordinator and a team of Learning Area teacher experts. Print materials form a significant proportion of the learning program for the students. The use of technology is however being integrated, especially in areas such as English, Languages Other Than English, Cross Curricula studies and Technology and Enterprise. Online learning will become a reality as more courses become 'e-learning' based. There are a variety of camps and excursions provided for full time students throughout the academic school year. T he Middle School dedicates itself to the holistic development of the child including the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual aspects of student growth. The Post Compulsory School of Isolated and Distance Education caters for a range of students in a variety of situations and locations in Western Australia, Australia and around the world. The largest group of students enrolled at SIDE in Post Compulsory Studies is also enrolled at their local high school. SIDE provides these students with the opportunity to study subjects which are not available at their schools. Students studying independently in remote locations, or unable to attend school, make up another large group within the Post Compulsory area. A limited number of places is also offered to adults who are not able attend other learning institutions but wish to improve their educational and employment opportunities. The Post Compulsory School faces many challenges including the need to be responsive to changing student needs in terms of the range of courses offered and the mode in which they are delivered. The use of technology is being integrated into the development of the courses of study making eLearning increasingly a reality. The move towards a more 'open access' approach to Post Compulsory education through SIDE is also being investigated. | ||||
