RIVERSIDE LEARNING CENTRE

VISION STATEMENT

Learning and Teaching
* Learning is a life long process. Every child has a right to an
excellent learning environment.
* All children have the right to an education that allows them
to develop to their full potential.

Students and Individuals
* Everyone should feel supported, encouraged and valued.
* Everyone should be encouraged to develop their skills and potential.
* The dignity and worth of the individual should be promoted.

School Location and Facilities

Riverside Education Support Centre commenced operations in 1995 in conjunction with the opening of Riverside Primary School. The Centre provides an integrated learning environment for students with intellectual disabilities. This includes four classrooms, a therapy room and a purpose built toilet facility necessary to accomodate the needs of students whose range of abilities are from mild/moderate to severe.

We currently have an enrolment of 34 students, catering from years 1-7.

School Council

Riverside Education Support Centre and Riverside Primary Schools combine to form the Riverside Primary Schools Council. The Council consists of the Principals of the two schools, staff representatives and parent representatives elected by the P & C Association. The P & C Association is also a joint schools' Association.

Integration

The Education Support Centre and the Primary School maintain a shared environment. Students are integrated for Sport, Physical Education, Music, Assemblies, Swimming lessons, Incursions, Graduations, Reward Days, Athletic Carnivals, whole class collaboration and individual student integration. Parents are encouraged to participate through the joint schools P&C Association, School Council and ASSPA. The schools collaborate on Evacuation Policies, Behaviour Management Policies and Crisis Management Policies.

Educational Programmes

Individual Education Plans

Staff, Parents, therapist, and other agencies collaborate to develop Individual Education Plans for each student. Outcomes are developed for each student in all Learning Areas over a semester. These are reviewed at the end of the semester and new outcomes are established. Student's progress is also reported through portfolios.

Parents are encouraged to attend Learning Journeys, Individual Education Plan Meetings and Assemblies.

Support Agencies

The students and staff are supported by a number of outside agencies, including DCD and DSC. The School Age Therapy Services provide an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and Speech Therapist. A School Psychologist and School Nurse are available on a regular basis. The Centre for Inclusive Schooling provides a visiting teacher to support staff and provide essential equipment.

Bus

Students are eligible for the bus that transports students to and from their home each day. A conveyance allowance is available for those students who are unable to access the bus.

Reporting

The Curriculum Framework with Student Outcome Statements provides the backbone to programming in the classrooms and is used when reporting to parents. Priorities include a whole school Protective Behaviours Programme, Reading, Indigenous Education and Technology. All students receive instruction to their level of ability and appropriate need. We have developed a Reporting to Parents Policy that includes formal and informal ways that we report to parents each year.

Activities

The two junior classes attend horse riding sessions with RDA at Fairbridge, Pinjarra, for a semester each year. This has been very successful in the development of physical skills, community integration and self esteem. Cooking lessons in each class on a weekly basis support the development of reading, technology, maths and social skills. All students in the school attend a camp for up to three days every second year. All students participate in swimming lessons at the beginning of the year and an Education Support Swimming Carnival at the end of the year. We have also had outstanding success in the Peel Schools Fest at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, with all staff and students presenting a Makaton song.

Technology

Technology remains an ongoing focus with all students receiving individual and group computer lessons. E-mail and the use of internet is encouraged, particularly in the senior classes. Technology to support communication for students with more severe disabilities is purchased when required. We have also built an excellent range of CD ROM resources to assist students with intellectual disabilities.

Commitment

Staff are committed, caring and supportive of all staff, students and parents and this enables us to ensure we are providing Learning and Teaching opportunities that are individualised and at the students needs level.

We are developing some strong data (dating back to 2001) that demonstrates our schools outstanding achievements in a variety of Learning Areas.
