| Peel Language Development School opened on 4 February 2002 and was the first purpose built facility for early language intervention in Western Australia. The main campus is co located with Rockingham Lakes Primary School situated in the St Michel private garden estate in Port Kennedy. The school also has satellite classes co located at Mandurah Primary School, Glencoe Primary School and Bungaree Primary School. The concept of a 'school within a school' is unique within the educational landscape of Western Australia and breaks new ground for the delivery of programs for children with language disorders and difficulties. This fostering of close co-operation and collaboration between these school communities provides opportunities for integrated and inclusive planning and delivery of a unique program. The Language School caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 3 The school community draws from all areas of the lower Kwinana, Rockingham and Peel districts giving us a diverse cohort of students. The Peel Language Development School places students who meet the entrance criteria, set by the Department of Education for all Language Development Schools. Staff members are specially trained and work within a collaborative model of service. Teaching staff participate in on-going professional development in order to ensure that they keep abreast of current research and educational practice. Education Assistants work alongside the teachers in the classrooms or support the speech and language program by carrying through specific individual speech and language activities under the direction of their teacher or the speech pathologist. The Peel Language Development School also has the services of a Speech Pathologist who works alongside teachers to plan and implement the specialised program.School Growth The school growth is dependant on Local Area Planning. It is hoped in the future to provide more places for student in need of this early language intervention service to cater fully for the community in our catchment.Referral and Placement of the student population State wide referral procedures and standard reporting formats apply to all Language Development facilities. Both a speech pathology assessment and a psychological assessment for children applying for P to year 3 schooling are required as well as a Teacher Questionnaire where appropriate.
