| Oombulgurri is a small remote aboriginal community situated on the Forest River in the far north of Western Australia. The country is rugged and is characterised by spectacular immense ancient river gorges and cascading waterfalls. The 'wet season' from Jan - April can bring torential rain and a surging Forest River that has flooded the community many times. While Oombulgurri is geographically close to Wyndham, is only accessible by air and boat. Oombulgurri Remote Community is the former Forest River Mission. The Department of Education assumed responsibility for the school in 1982 at the request of the people of the community. It has a long and checked mission and stolen generation history that impacts on the school and community today. The school still utilises the original stone building that has been extensively renovated in the last four years. It also has four prefabricated buildings to support learning programs offered from Kindergaten to year 12. It is well resourced including networked computers and broadband internet. The sdchool offers a full curriculum to Primary and Hgih School students including TAFE courses and Structured Work Place learning. The community has supported the school with high attendance of students when they are in the community, however transiency is a major factor in the lives of most students as families regularly move between Wyndham and Oombulgurri. This has a profound influence on educational performance. Language learning is the major focus of the school. Students at the school are English as a Second Language learners. Staff have implimented a two hour literacy block throughout the school that aims to improve the reading and writing outcomes of all students with a focus on teaching Standard Australian English. It is a priority of the school to present a welcoming and attractive learning environment to the school community and encourage community participation. State and Federal funding has assisted the school to provide covered play areas and major upgrades to most of the buildings as well as a new high school building featuring home science equipment. Community members employed at the school have provided welcoming support for the students and teaching staff. We have four Aboriginal Education Officers, a school officer, two gardeners, a cleaner and a morning tea co-ordinator. They have significantly raised the level of community involvement including organising a cultural week and running an attendance program. The school has improved the health of the students with close collaboration with the clinic who monitor the students health regularly. We also provide a high iron, high carbohydrate morning tea program that has been sponsored by the Save the Childrens Fund A major challenge to the school lifting student outcomes is the disfunctional social and polictical structures within the community. | ||||
