| SCHOOL OVERVIEW One Arm Point Remote Community School is part of a coastal community situated on a narrow point of land and is flanked by the ocean on three sides. It serves an Aboriginal community of some 400 Bardi people. The Community has a C.D.E.P, which provides a form of employment for the adult community members. There is a growing 'out stations' movement. At present the school focus is on the ongoing improvement of all students through an educational program sensitive to the special challenges of the school. The School receives extensive funding including PCAP, CLP and ILSS grants. STAFF PROFILE Most teachers at One Arm Point have had a few years teaching experience, the range being from two to twenty three years experience.. There is a mixture of single teachers and those with partners. Teachers are expected to plan, teach, monitor and assess collaboratively. AIEO's are included in collaborative sessions. We are fortunate to have very experienced AIEO's who are pursuing additional studies to enhance their learning. The High School has one full time teacher. Many families choose to send their children to towns for secondary schooling. A number of legitimate factors contribute to this decision. The Secondary teacher instruct students in all learning areas according to their ability. They access local projects eg aquaculture, horticulture and jewellery making then incorporate these into the overall program. The AIEO's and Community Language Specialists present the LOTE program across the School, which is the local Bardi language. SCHOOL FACILITIES The School has an on-site pre primary, four primary classrooms, a secondary classroom, home economics and manual arts room. It also has an administration / library block. We are upgrading our computer network with new workstations and presently have good access to inernet. CONSULTATION PROCESSES The Community is involved in the School's decision making through involvement in the School Council. They are also invited to School Development Days. As with most schools a few dedicated parents make up most committees. Our AIEO's add a Community perspective to staff meetings and school development day decision making. OTHER FACTORS Though only 218 kms from Broome, the road is unsealed for the majority of the way. Therefore travel time and ease of travel is determined by the weather conditions. The Community is very close as everyone is related. Teachers therefore have to be constantly aware of what they say and how they act. Community expectations of teachers are very high. The Community has a mini supermarket, a Health Clinic (the doctor visits most weeks on a Wednesday) and a workshop for fuel.. The fishing is good and the weather from April to November is great. Housing for teachers is adequate and commensurate with other remote schools in the Kimberley. | ||||
