| North East Metropolitan Language Development CentreThe North East Metropolitan Districts Language Development Centre (LDC) conducts specialised speech and language programs for students in kindergarten to year 3 who have been identified by a speech pathologist and a school psychologist as having a significant language disability. Students tend to stay in the LDC for an average of 2 to 3 years. Many students are referred prior to beginning formal schooling, although if they are enrolled in an educational facility at the time of referral, a teacher questionnaire also forms a part of the referral. LDC enrolments are from families and schools within the Swan Education District which covers the north-east metropolitan and outer metropolitan area. The LDC has 199 students across four sites, with the administration sharing the West Morley Primary campus. The West Morley site has an enrolment of 107 students across preprimary to year 3. An off-site facility shares the North Balga Primary campus and caters for 45 students in years 1 to 3. Tara Street Kindergarten and Penrith Place cater for a further 47 kindergarten / preprimary students. Staff are selected on merit to work in the LDC and bring a wealth of skills to their role. They are committed to improving outcomes for our students and continually upgrade their skills through participation in a range of professional development. A collaborative model of teaching operates with the main focus for intervention across all curriculum areas being language development. A number of staff have leadership roles within the LDC including a level 3 teacher, kindy/preprimary and off-site coordinators. Teacher assistants are an integral part of the teaching and learning process and work in the classrooms to support teachers with classroom programs. Also on staff is the speech pathologist team led by a senior speech pathologist. Their role is to work closely with class teachers and assistants to develop specific programs for students. The LDC liaises closely with the district's Speech and Language Service Team. Specific programs include: * Phonological Awareness * Semantic Organisation * Oral Narrative * Comprehension * Social skills The parents in the LDC community are a vital link in supporting their child's language development and are assisted in this role with the provision of parent workshops, parent/teacher meetings, family picnics, class open days, student learning journeys, teacher/speech pathologist student reports. Parent participation is also evident through P&C Standing Committee and School Council involvement. | ||||
