| Ngurrawaana Remote Community School is situated approximately 1450 kms north of Perth. The nearest regional centres are Karratha and Roebourne and both are located about 100kms away in a north and northwest direction. The spectacular Millstream National Park surrounds the Ngurrawaana Community. In the late 1970's the community was established at its present location and in 1990 the State Government granted the Ngurrawaana Group Inc. a 99 year lease on the land they occupied. This land area covers approximately 200.2225 ha. Access to the community and school from Karratha or Roebourne is via Pilbara Iron and Water Corporation access roads. These roads require all drivers to have permission from the respective companies for travel purposes at all times. A permit to use the Pilbara Iron access roads can be obtained from the Tourist Bureaus at Karratha or Roebourne. Permission to use the Water Corporation road can be obtained by contacting the Water Corp. depot at Millstream. During the wet season these roads may be closed indefinitely due to unsafe driving conditions and no permits will be issued until the roads are deemed safe again. All these access roads are unsealed and 4wd vehicles are strongly recommended. The Community members are all Indigenous and Yindjibarndi is their first language. The population of the Community is generally around 25 people comprising 10 to 15 adults and 10 to 20 children. These figures fluctuate constantly with family groups moving between Roebourne and the community. The buildings consist of 10 dwellings, small community room, small medical centre and the school buildings. There is no store in the community and all food and other supplies etc. have to be purchased in Karratha or Roebourne. A Medical doctor and Health nurse visit alternately on a fortnightly rotation for approximately 5 hours. They spend 2 hours at the school and 3 hours at the medical centre. The current school site and buildings were opened in late 2005 and consists of 4 teaching/learning areas and an administaration area. They are modern and well equipped buildings with a large range of teaching resources available. The allocated 2006 staffing is: 1 full-time Principal 2 full-time Teachers 1 part-time Registrar (based in Karratha) 1 part-time School officer/RIP aide 1 part-time Education assistant/library officer 1 part-time AIEO 1 part-time gardener 1 part-time cleaner The school and the community are both working hard to establish a bright future for all involved. The Aboriginal Literacy Strategy is the initial key focus for the school in terms of quality education and teaching practice. There are numerous incentives to encourage student attendance and their continued participation. | ||||
