| Ngalapita Remote Community School Overview. Ngalapita RCS first opened its doors to students on December 1, 2003. The school was constructed over a period of four months preceding this date. The name for the school comes from a near-by billabong which is central to the lives of the Aboriginal people who, apart from the teachers, make up this community. The community has 11 houses, an office, a small store, a power plant and a reverse osmosis water treatment plant. The community occupies one square kilometre of Kalyeeda Station. The school grounds, teachers' small dongas and the school buildings are situated 200m to the east of the community. A 900m airstrip is available all year round. There are no other support services available in the community and members travel to Fitzroy Crossing (190km to the north-east), Derby 260km to the north -west or Broome (400km to the west) to access essentials such as medical, policing, commercial and retail services. The Early Childhood students learn in their first language, Kriol. The middle, upper primary and secondary students are taught in Standard Australian English and are shown how to code switch between these two languages. The school uses the Aboriginal Literacy Stategy for its Literacy programme and found it easy to adopt this strategy in 2005 because of the programme it had had in place prior to this being mandated for Remote Aboriginal Schools in Western Australia. The community is proud of its small school and runs a Homemaker's programme which supplies a community prepared lunch for all students. Community members are keen to have a say in the plans made for the school and its students. They often meet as a whole group to discuss school issues and planning. They felt immense pride when the school was named The Premiers Reading School of the Year2005 for which the school received a prize of $5 000 to spend on Literacy materials. Ngalapita RCS takes great pride in the safe and caring learning environment it offers its students. Ngalapita community members do their very best to support the school achieve this environment. | ||||
