Mount Hawthorn Education Support Centre, situated on the Mount Hawthorn Primary School campus is in the West Coast Education District. The Centre caters for students from Year 1 to Year 7 identified as having special needs, and who will benefit from individualised programs in small group settings.

The Centre was built approximately 25 years ago. In 1997 via a Capital Works program the Centre was redesigned with a new classroom also being built. The Centre now has three classrooms; a Conference Room; Staffroom; Purpose built toilets and an Outdoor Sensory Area. The Centre shares an Undercover Area and Canteen with the Senior and Junior Primary Schools.

Students are included in mainstream campus activities. They share play facilities with mainstream students and are integrated into classes when appropriate for a range of activities such as art, physical education and choir. It is anticipated that some students from the junior primary will continue to join our classes for shopping and cooking.

The children who attend the Centre are on Individual Education Plans (IEP's) designed to meet their individual special educational needs. The IEP's are planned at the start of each semester in partnership with parents and Therapists and encompass all learning areas of the Curriculum with the exception of L.O.T.E. (Language Other Than English) Progress towards achieving objectives is regularly reviewed.

The Centre has a high number of students with Autism and since February 1999, the school has offered the Applied Behaviour Analysis Program with Discrete Trial Training as part of the students' classroom program. The program has been successful in helping Autistic children to increase their ability to attend to, model and to acquire new skills.

Currently there are three permanent teachers working full-time. The Principal also has a teaching component. The teachers all have extensive experience gained by teaching in various support facilities. The centre has a complement of eight education assistants, all experienced in working with Special Needs children.

Therapy Focus provides support to the school via Physiotherapists, a Speech Therapist and Occupational Therapists.

In 2006, the school is organised with classes on a multi-age grouping basis. Students have been allocated to home classrooms taking into account their particular needs and abilities and mixing verbal and non-verbal children together. The children are also allocated to specialist classes each day in order to cater more specifically for needs across key priority areas of Literacy and Numeracy. The Centre participates in a comprehensive 'Inclusive Schools' program which supports integration of Education Support students into mainstream Junior and Senior Primary classes as well as students from these schools visiting the centre for intensive Students At Educational Risk(SAER) support.

The Centre is currently part of a Local Area Education Planning initiative via the Department of Education to initiate the amalgamation of the three separate schools sharing this campus into one level five Primary school. The Education Support Centre will sit outside of this process and remain an autonomous facility. This has ongoing benefits for the Centre with minimal adjustments.

There are computers in all three classrooms and all administration and classroom computers are networked and linked to the internet via Broadband access. Information Technology is incorporated into all individual education programs and is a significant aspect of the program for more senior students.

Staff are involved in the decision making processes of the Centre as follows;

Teaching staff and non teaching staff representatives on the School Council, and the Finance Committee act as,
-as Cost Centre Managers, or Project Managers,
-as Program Managers, and
-as an Occupational Health & Safety Representative.

Parents may be involved in the decision making as representatives on the Parents & Citizens' Association (P & C) or as School Council Representatives.
