The Merriwa Education Support Centre is located in the rapidly developing northern corridor of Perth within the West Coast Education District. The Centre caters for primary aged children with an intellectual disability. Students attend the school from Yanchep to Kinross with a significant number using the school bus. The school shares the site and facilities with Merriwa Primary School. The campus has a modern, attractive and inclusive design with the Centre classrooms scattered amongst those of the primary school. A Dental Therapy Unit is on site.

Both schools work closely together to develop a culture of promoting the highest ideals of learning and social interaction in an inclusive setting. We aspire to being a warm, friendly, welcoming school where manners, behaviour and personal effort or excellence are regarded as important, and where the needs of the individual child are placed at the centre of every decision. There is a rich cross fertilisation of professional knowledge between staff from both schools, and students from each, are able to spend time in the other when appropriate for their learning needs.

In 2006 the Centre was selected to take part in the Department of Education And Training's Intensive Early Intervention Project. This caters for Kindergarten and Preschool children with autism spectrum disorders or global developmental delay and provides students with an intensive programme using Applied Behaviour Analysis. At the end of the project it is hoped to be able to successfully mainstream these students into year one. Demand for places in the trial has outstripped the number available. The project is currently under external evaluation by the University of Western Australia.

The use of information technology plays an important part in the Centre's learning strategies and upgrading of classroom information technology (IT) facilities are planned. One of the classroom teachers has the role of IT coordinator. The Centre has a part-time Learning Support Coordinator(LSC). The LSCs from the Primary School and the Centre work very closely and collaboratively together.
