| Leeming Education Support Centre was opened in 1996 and established as part of the Leeming Senior High School campus. Special education programs have been developed to meet the needs of students with disabilities of high school age. Student outcomes are focused on achieving functional independence. As the only metropolitan high school Centre west of Albany Highway, students enrolled are from diverse socio economic and cultural backgrounds. Administratively the Centre is separate from Leeming Senior High School but in all other ways the students and staff are an integral part of the school community. The host high school is on a flat site and shares recreation resources with Melville City. The site and facilities are ideal for special needs students particularly those who use wheelchairs. Staff consist of one teaching Principal, six teachers, six teacher aides and a registrar. All teaching staff have taught for over fifteen years in a variety of different settings. Teachers are qualified in special education and the Principal holds a Masters degree in this field. Staff meetings are held fortnightly where decisions are made regarding programs and individual education planning. The school based decision making group includes two staff and two parents. This group meets at least once a term to review the School Development Plan. The Centre has three teaching areas that are located in three different high school faculty departments. This year (2006) a specialist Life Skills Unit was opened. Individual education programs have been designed to meet the needs of the students. Students have the opportunity of participating in programs taught by Leeming Senior High School staff in the following faculties: Business Education, Design and Technology, Home Economics, Physical Education, Performing and Visual Arts and Science. The type and degree of inclusion is decided collaboratively with all stake holders. Annual progress reviews of student outcomes are held. Parent's participation in these reviews is considered essential. Post compulsory programs have been developed where there is a focus on community-based life skills and work training. | ||||
