| Kalgoorlie School of Air caters for the education of isolated children from Kindergarten to Year 7. The school was established in 1962 using radio infrastructure provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Although there have been many advances in technology since this time, the school still retains its relationship with the R.F.D.S.. Of the five Schools of the Air (SOTA) in Western Australia, Kalgoorlie SOTA covers the largest area. The school's catchment area covers more than 750,000 sq km stretching north 400 km to Wiluna, north east 1,200 km to the Northern Territory, South Australia and West Australian border, 800 km east to the south Australian border and south 350 km to Esperance. The clientele for the school are drawn predominantly from the pastoral sector but in recent years there have been a significant number of enrolments from families living and working outside of this industry. These students may be the children of prospectors, managers and staff at Road Houses and Motels or others working and living in remote communities. The school's teaching staff includes a principal along with general and specialist teachers. All teaching staff in the school share the responsibility for visiting students and Home Tutors. In almost all cases a visit to a family's home requires the teachers to stay overnight. All students are visited by their teacher up to three times per year. In most cases teachers travel via 4WD vehicle but on occasions the school flies teachers out to visit students. In addition to this, teachers are involved in the planning, organisation and orchestration of several camps and seminars each year. Lessons are delivered from base daily via satellite links to all our locations. Eligibility to enrol at the school of the air is determined by Education Department criteria but generally speaking, students need to be geographically isolated from a mainstream school or from transport to that school. Kalgoorlie School of Air provides its education program with a mix of online lessons via satellite and individually designed programs for its students. The school focuses on Literacy, numeracy and information communication technology and a collaborative learning environment with the Home Tutors and students. The highlights of Kalgoorlie School of Air year are its Home Tutor Seminar early in the year, Activity days at stations, Sports camp, mid year and the 10 day Combined Schools of Air muster in Perth towards the end of the year. | ||||
