| (As at second semester 2006) INTRODUCTION Jungdranung Remote Community School is situated 132km south east of Kununurra in Kija tribal land in the East Kimberley Region of WA. The name of the school is derived from a local elder and defender of the land in the nineteenth century. The school is set amidst beautiful scenery and the gorges, waterholes and sunsets are breathtaking. Jungdranung School is staffed by a teaching Principal and two other teaching staff with the support of one AIEO and a teacher aide and a gardener. The school caters to between twenty and twenty five students aged between three and fifteen years of age. Jungdranung School was officially opened as a 'Special Aboriginal School' in 1984. Since that time the buildings and grounds have been steadily improved to their current standard. The school is comprised of two main buildings: the first is the original school building incorporating the Principal's office/staffroom/kitchen; the K-3 classroom; library and storeroom. The second building is a demountable classroom brought to the school in 2004 to accommodate the 4-7 class. The school is situated 400m from the community. Teacher accommodation consists of the Principal's house and a Cavalier Unit, both of which border the school grounds. COMMUNITY - LOCATION & SERVICES Jungdranung School is located amidst the Ragged Range in Mandangala Community on Glen Hill Station, a cattle station managed and operated by local community members. The community itself has fourteen houses, a community hall and a compound housing the community's diesel power generators. Mandangala supports a fluctuating population of approximately fifty people. There are few services located in the community. The Ord Valley Health Service operate a clinic in Mandangala one day each fortnight, medical emergencies require the sick or injured to travel 135km to Kununurra. Argyle Diamonds Minesite is located 25km away. The nearest shop of any kind is 50km away at Doon Doon Roadhouse which is also the nearest provider of fuel. Groceries, mail and all other services necessitate a journey of two hours or more (each way) to Kununurra including 30km of very rough dirt road crossed by numerous creeks. Mandangala is regularly isolated by impassable roads between January and May. THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Parents and community members value education highly; this is reflected in very low truancy rates, good general student punctuality and great enthusiasm for learning. Jungdranung is a well resourced school with sixteen computers available for student use. Senior students habitually word process written work, use the internet as a research tool, produce slide shows and digital video productions. K-3 students utilise educational software daily to enhance their acquisition of outcomes. The school has a strong focus on literacy, embedded within all curriculum areas. Jungdranung RCS proudly provides education that focuses on pride, achievement, values and empowerment in a caring and inclusive environment. Pastoral care is at the centre of our core business.
