Joondalup Education Support Centre (Joondalup ESC) provides educational programs for students of primary school age (6-12 years) with intellectual disabilities and special educational needs.

Joondalup ESC was established in 1992 when the primary school was built in the northern Perth suburb of Joondalup. The Centre's thirty students share a campus with the students of Joondalup Primary School. An effective and harmonious working partnership operates between the two schools, including a unique joint School Council. There is strong community support for Joondalup ESC, with the primary school, local businesses and families collecting tokens to help the Centre to come first in the Westfield Whitfords 'Shop For Your Schools' competition in 2005.

Dedicated staff teach a range of quality programs designed through joint planning of Individual Education Programs with parents and therapists. Parents are a highly valued part of our school community and excellent parent-school support is enjoyed through the open door communication policy. The ESC staff also welcome opportunities to show prospective families and staff around the innovative and progressive campus.

An exciting array of inclusion models have been developed so that some students with disabilities can work alongside their mainstream peers for negotiated, planned activities according to individual needs. Staff from the ESC collaborate with staff from the primary school providing support to maximize student outcomes.

Priorities this year reflect a strong emphasis on respect for one another and valuing diversity. School Plan priorities are:

1 The Inclusion Program, teaching appropriate social skills and developing independence with students learning to understand the power of choice and how their choices dictate the consequences.

2 Fundamental Movement Skills which facilitates improvement of gross motor skills through explicit teaching and student practice, and

3 Curriculum Improvement Plan Phase 2 which ensures that school assessement and reporting procedures are in line with DET policy.
Specialised programs like TEACCH (structured independent learning) and PECS (an expressive communication system) are implemented as needed.

A wide range of Information Technology is utilized at Joondalup ESC including Intellikeys (an alternative keyboard), the Internet and at least two computers in each classroom. Digital cameras and a digital video camera are used extensively to support classroom programs and for reporting purposes. Colourful portfolios are an integral part of our reporting to parents.

The school motto 'Learning for Life' underpins our philosophy that every child can learn and contribute to the wider community in adult life. It is very rewarding when students exceed our already high expectations!
