| Hospital School Services (HSS) is a unique service providing educational support for students whose physical or mental health currently prevents them from successfully participating in another educational system. Students in years K-12 come from schools across the state. HSS also provides educational support to a designated group of mature age students. Goals: -To deliver a relevant educational program to a student while in hospital or at home for medical reasons -To collaborate with schools of long term and/or repeat admissions in devising and delivering an educational program in line with student need and home school curriculum -To work within multidisciplinary teams to support educational, medical and psychosocial needs of identified students -To facilitate transition back to school or ongoing study HSS operates twenty one programs, located across five metropolitan health department settings. Each have differing criteria for admission. The content and focus of programs also varies according to the nature of each program and the needs and circumstances of students. There are nine ward teaching programs and five liaison programs at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and also the Family Pathways Program at Stubbs Terrace; the Visiting Teaching Program (Home or agency-bound students) ; Community Hospitals Program; RPH Shenton Park Program; the Andrew Relph Program at Warwick CAHMS Clinic and the Bentley WAY Program and Families at Work Program. From the administrative base at PMH, principal Grant Wheatley, and deputy principals Liz Hughes and Trevor Briedis provide leadership across all sites. Approximately fifty teaching and support staff bring to HSS strong interpersonal skills, flexibility and a dedication to students with health related special educational needs. Staff are selected through merit selection and are ably supported by approximately forty volunteers. Maintaining connections with students' own schools helps all students be resilient and accomplish well in the face of their many health and education challenges. Technology is a key tool in achieving this. | ||||
