Halls Head Community College Education Support Centre was established in 2001. We are located just out of Mandurah, a coastal city, 86km south of Perth. We cater for students with an intellectual disability, from years eight to ten. We have a population of 41 students. Our students come from Mandurah and it surrounding suburbs, as well as from the townsites as far north as Golden Bay, south to Waroona and east to Pinjarra.

STAFF AND SUPPORT SERVICES
We are currently staffed with eight teachers, seven education assistants, Registrar and a Principal. Our teachers have additional Education Support qualifications or training. There is a school psychologist appointed to the school on a part-time basis. We also receive support and services from a range of therapists and a community based police officer. We are a member of the School Volunteer Program and have volunteers working with us.

OUR FACILITIES

We are situated on the campus of our partner school, Halls Head Community College. We have three classrooms, two collegiate rooms and a therapy room dedicated to the Education Support Centre within the school. We also have access to the wonderful facilities of our partner school. These include; a gymnasium, performing arts centre, specialist Art rooms, sewing, cooking and design and technology workshops. Separate offices in the main administration building have been provided for the Principal and the registrar.

HISTORY

Local Area Planning decisions prior to 2000 enabled the transformation of secondary schooling in Mandurah to three middle schools and a senior campus. Halls Head College and the Education Support Centre opened in February 2001 for year eight and nine students. This year is our first year with three year groups from year eight to year ten.

SCHOOL DECISION MAKING AND CONSULTATION PROCESSES

Our School Council consists of parent, staff and community representation. Members are elected each year to provide input into our school development. We have two student councillors who have the opportunity to contribute to our school development whilst participating as members of the Halls Head Community College Student Council. Our school is committed to participative decision-making and a number of committees operate to encourage staff to contribute to our school development.

INDIVIDUALISED EDUCATION PROGRAM

Our students are offered individualised programs to cater for their individual needs. Our specialist staff can provide support for literacy or numeracy difficulties. A great emphasis is also placed on Social Development Skills and Values Education. We offer anger management and assertiveness training courses as needed

CORE SUBJECTS.

We are committed to providing learning opportunities which will enable our students to work towards the overarching outcomes stated in the WA Curriculum Framework. Our students are entitled to a full education program as outlined in the WA Curriculum Framework. The range of core subjects offered includes: Language, Maths, Science and Studies of Society and Environment. .

LOTE:

We introduced Indonesian as a school LOTE for the first time in 2002. All our year levels have access to a LOTE learning program.

INTEGRATION OPPORTUNITIES

Our students integrate (where appropriate) into classes with their year level peers for several periods per week. They integrate for subjects such as; Design and Technology - Materials, Drama/Dance, Digital Media/photography, Information Technology, Visual Arts, Food Technology, Fabrics and Music.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

We offer a variety of learning activities to meet the individual needs of our students. Students may be selected according to their interest, suitability or need for any of the following subjects:

Health and Beauty - This programme is designed to develop skills and knowledge related to basic hygiene and presentation. Our young women experiment with different kinds of skincare products, make-ups and nail care products. The program also teaches the students how to present themselves for certain occasions (eg job interviews and work). The programme also aims to develop in the girls a healthy concept of self by critically examining female stereotypes of beauty.

Lifeskills - Cooking and Budgeting - Students learn practical life skills. Students budget for, prepare and cook simple healthy foods. Our school camp provides opportunities to practice these skills.

Art/Craft - All students have the opportunity to experiment with their creativity during art sessions. Students use various tools, materials and media to achieve Art outcomes.

Technology and Enterprise - Students design, make and evaluate products and technological processes whilst working with a range of tools and materials in our multi-purpose room.

Vocational Education and Training program for our Year 10 - students investigate career options, develop public speaking and interview skills, organise and produce portfolios, visit community agencies to develop their support network and participate in a structured workplace learning programme at a number of workplaces. They also undertake units of competency towards a Certificate 1 TAFE Course in Business Services.
