| The Fremantle Language Development Centre (FLDC) is a school for children who have been identified with a severe speech and language impairment. Our very committed staff provides specialised speech, language and academic intervention on an individual and small group basis for students from Kindergarten to year 3. The FLDC accepts students who live within the Fremantle Education District school zone. We are located across three sites where we share facilities with local primary schools, enabling children from the LDC to benefit from interaction with the partner school for play, sporting and cultural events, assemblies and other special activities. The main administration of the FLDC is located on the Caralee Community School site and here we have two kindergartens, three pre primary and six primary classes from year one to three. Located at both of the primary schools at Beeliar and Bull Creek are one Pre Primary and 2 primary classes. The children are transported to the school through the W.A. Government Department of Transport bus services. Referral The referral process is co-ordinated through the Fremantle-Peel Education District Office. Both a speech pathology assessment and a psychological assessment are required as well as a teacher questionnaire where appropriate. The placement committee interpret the information and make offers of placement to children who meet entrance criteria. The duration of attendance depends on each individual child, the progress made and the appropriateness of placement. Every student is reviewed on a continuing basis and parents are kept fully informed and participate in all decisions. The FLDC is staffed by experienced and trained speech and language teachers who continue to update their skills through an ongoing series of relevant professional learning. The FLDC employs two speech pathologists who work with teachers and parents in assessing, evaluating and implementing appropriate programs for the students. They also work in the classrooms with small groups or individuals to ensure an ongoing program that maximises opportunities for positive learning outcomes. The FLDC support and implement a co-ordinated transition program that assists students on transfer back to their local school. This transition program provides knowledge and resources to schools and teachers in the implementation of suitable and appropriate speech and language based programs in order to provide opportunities for maximum learning outcomes. The FLDC's experienced staff also works collaboratively with the Centre for Inclusive Schooling speech and language team to support services at a district level. A community based early intervention program of supporting playgroups for 0 - 4 year olds with a focus on the development of early language skills has been established on the Caralee Community School site. This program aims to develop and support strong links between the community, families and the schools and to support parents in developing strong parenting skills. The Fremantle Language Development Centre offers a very supportive environment that focuses on the social, emotional and academic growth of students with speech and language impairment. | ||||
