| School Profile EAST VICTORIA PARK EDUCATION SUPPORT CENTRE Our purpose is to provide each child with opportunities, through individual education programs and small group teaching, to maximise the development of physical well being, positive responsible attitudes and skills for life long learning. In 1988 East Victoria Park Education Support Centre (EVP ESC) was built as a partner school to East Victoria Park Primary, located at 30, Beatty Avenue in East Victoria Park. Native plants and large shade trees surround the grounds. Play equipment and playground space is shared with the primary school. We have 4 air-conditioned classrooms with computers, an Administration block, a therapy room, a multi sensory room and a kitchen. We can utilise facilities at East Victoria Park Primary as required. EVP ESC caters for approximately 30 children with intellectual disabilities in the Canning District and staff are specifically trained to support these children. An enthusiastic team of teachers and Education Assistants are committed to providing a safe, inclusive learning environment and quality education for all students. EVP ESC and EVP Primary School work as one where possible and integration is encouraged from both populations. This inclusive approach between both schools provides a rich variety of learning opportunities. We have a combined P&C Association and at present our own School Council. Educational programs address the eight learning areas and students work at their own level within the Curriculum Framework. The Centre has an academic focus, using structured programs which effectively support students with learning difficulties. Each student has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which is reviewed regularly. These plans are formulated in consultation with the parents, teachers and therapists and recognise the child's individuality. The Languages Other Than English (LOTE) program, across years 3-7, covers the spoken and written language of Italian and also looks at aspects of Italian culture. Some of the special programs that we run are: Community Access Program (CAP): Designed to provide opportunities for our students to practise and develop social/life skills learned at school. The students are involved in outings every two weeks which involve shopping, catching buses/trains, purchasing food and visiting community facilities. Cooking: Weekly sessions provide opportunities to cook lunch and eat together in a restaurant style setting and also cook muffins for staff and parents. Treatment & education of Autistic & related communication of handicapped children (TEACCH): A structured program which is used internationally for students with Autism and communication difficulties. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS): Used also to facilitate communication skills in children with Autism and communication difficulties. Active-ATE: A dynamic, fun, medically sound exercise program promoting lifelong health and fitness. Brain Gym: A gentle end energising program which includes movement designed to coordinate the brain and body for greater productivity and learning. Self Care: Students learn about caring for themselves independently. Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS)/Values: Values are incorporated into all aspects of learning and are highlighted in PATHS weekly sessions. Students develop self control, positive self esteem, emotional awareness, basic problem solving skills and social and environmental responsibility. | ||
