Duncraig Education Support Centre was established in 2004. The Centre is located with Duncraig Senior High School at the Readshaw Road Duncraig campus which is 18 kms from Perth and 2 kms from the Indian Ocean. Public transport is easily accessed and currently there is a school bus for students to be transported from home to the Centre and return.

The Centre has four teaching areas, an administration block, a staffroom and in future it is hoped an Independent Living Centre will be established. We have easily accessible disabled toilets and bathing/washing facilities. There is also a supported outside area which is staffed by Centre personnel before school, during recess and at lunchtimes. The students have access to all the High School facilities, including the computing rooms, library, gym, outside areas and canteen. The pastoral care personnel including the nurse, psychologist and chaplain are also available to our students and parents.

The Centre is a district facility and it caters for students in Years 8 - 12 with a mild to moderate intellectual disability. Many students have multiple disabilities, including autism and cerebral palsy. Students are enrolled in the Centre through the West Coast District Education Support Placement Committee. The majority of students come from local Primary Education Support Centres and Units. Parents of potential students (and the students themselves) are always welcome to visit the Centre during school hours. Please ring to ensure a suitable time is available and see what the students are doing and achieving!

School programs are designed to cater for the individual needs of each student. A collaborative process between parents, students, teachers and in some instances therapists and representatives from external agencies, is utilised to develop Individual Education Plans (IEPs) in Years 8 - 10 and Individual Transition Plans (ITPs) in Years 11 and 12.

IEPs target the specific needs and abilities of each student and cover a wide range of activities including academic subjects such as English and Mathematics, social skills, health issues, money handling and independence skills, plus many others.

ITPs for upper school students plan for the transition to post school options. As with IEPs they are developed with numerous stakeholders and look at the work experience as well as the traditional subjects in upper school.

The focus of the Centre programmes is as follows:

YEARS 8 - 10
Academic Performance - students are supported and encouraged to fullfill their potential in all subject areas.

Independent Living and Personal Development - programs are designed to develop independence, personal growth, raise self esteem and develop positive attitudes to learning and society.

Community Participation and Involvement - the Centre has a strong community paticipation programme which include numerous excursions and visits to the school. The Centre encourages parents, carers and community members to contribute to and participate in the continous improvement processes embedded in the Centre's ethos and philosophies.

YEARS 11 & 12
The Centre has the same emphases as in Years 8-10 with the addition of the focus on work experience. All students in upper school engage in two days of work experience each week. This experience is a supported placement; where necessary an education assistant supports the student to gain the experience and confidence to successfully attend and participate in work experience. Students are regularly visited by the classroom teacher at their work placements. Many students enrol in the district based Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) subjects. The goal is to assist students to find permanent meaningful employment during or at the completion of Year 12.

All students from the Centre are included in many programmes of Duncraig Senior High School. All students are members of the High School's Teacher Advisory Groups (TAGs) which meet every morning at the start of the school day. They also participate in whole school activities such as assemblies, Peer Support Programme, School Ball, Year Group River Cruises and 'Alive Week'. In terms of secondary school subjects and units, students from the Centre are integrated into mainstream classes according to each individual's abilities and needs. They can be supported in mainstream classes by education assistants and teaching staff from the Centre.

There is a strong spirit of cooperation and collaboration between Duncraig Education Support Centre and Duncraig Senior High School. The High School's inclusive practices ensure the Centre's students enjoy a worthwhile and suitable learning program that caters for their individual needs.
