| 1. LOCATION AND CLIMATE Dawul Remote Community School is located 110 km southwest of Kununurra on the Great Northern Highway in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is situated on Doon Doon Station, an Aboriginal owned cattle station of approximately one million acres (formerly Dunham River Station). The population of Doon Doon varies, with an average of 50 adults and 30 children. Doon Doon experiences 'Wet' and 'Dry' seasons. Temperatures range from 5 degree minimums during the 'dry' through to maximum temperatures of 40 degrees during the 'wet'. 2. FACILITIES There are no mail, banking or shopping facilities at Doon Doon, however EKAMS (East Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services) visit each fortnight, usually on a Tuesday. A full range of facilities are available in Kununurra including two supermarkets, a hospital, dentist, chemist, swimming pool, major banks etc. The school's registrar is also based in Kununurra. The community has a modern infrastructure, delivering reliable power, water and phone services. Internet connections are of adequate speed. A newly completed community store/roadhouse opened in 2002.3. THE SCHOOL The school has a 100% Aboriginal student population. Most students and community members speak Kimberley Kriol and the adults are competent SAE speakers. The community is supportive of the school and 100% student participation can be expected. Often families will travel between Doon Doon, Warmun, Wyndham and Halls Creek. Consequently, truancy is not a problem but itinerancy is. The school caters for students ranging from kindergarten to year 7. At the completion of year 7 students choose to attend school either at Darwin, Wyndham, Halls Creek, Kununurra or Perth. 4. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT At Dawul RCS, the School Council functions as the School Decision Making Group and generally meets once per term. The School Council chairperson, Ronnie Macale, is also the community chairperson. A LOTE & Culture program is well established in the school, introducing students to the local 'Woolah' language. . Community members often assist around the school as part of the daily CDEP program. The school is also a major source of employment for the community.5. FUTURE GROWTH . Several new houses are planned so student numbers will increase. 6. STAFFING PROFILE 3 x Teaching staff - Promotional x 1 and non-promotional x 2 3 x Non-teaching including 1 x AIEO 7.
