| About Cyril Jackson Sr Campus Education Support Centre Cyril Jackson Sr Campus Education Support Centre is located at 53 Reid Street in Bassendean in WA (Western Australia). You can contact us via phone on (08) 9378 2469. Cyril Jackson Education Support Centre is a Senior Campus Support Centre catering for both physically and intellectually disabled students between the ages of 16 and 18. The School Community is made up of students from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural groups and, due to the Centre's proximity to the railway line, draws students from many Perth suburbs. At present it is the only such centre in the State. The students in the Centre fall into the range of 'mild to moderate' to 'moderate' intellectual disability. This includes physical disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy and Spina Bifida. Approximately 40a0of the students come to the Centre from Special Schools and Centres, with the remainder being high support needs students from High School Units. The curriculum is driven by the needs of industry and the emphasis is on preparation for work and life after school. The three curriculum areas Career Education, Independent Living, and Leisure and Recreation. The Centre is based on the same campus as Cyril Jackson Senior Campus. The campus is totally wheelchair accessible with disabled toilet facilities in the Centre. The students are fortunate in that their role models in the main school are more mature and focussed than lower high school students (year 8-10) and offer a more understanding and supportive environment than a regular high school. It is thus that in this hassle-free environment these special needs students are able to prepare for the world of work. The special needs of the students are catered for through an individualised and negotiated curriculum arrived at during Individual Transition Planning Meetings (ITPs) with parents, teachers and other agency stakeholders. The 'preparation for work' program demands the involvement of a large number of outside agencies such as Centrelink, Disability Services Commission, Edge Employment, Intework and numerous other community-based groups. For the parents, the focus is on preparing their child for employment in the open workforce wherever possible. Supported Employment is sometimes a possibility, but only if agreed to by parents and employers. The students remain at the Centre for either two or three years, depending on their age upon entry. All students have to leave the Centre at the end of the year in which they turn 18, according to Departmental ruling. (No change from first semester 2002) | |||||||||||||||||||||
