| Mission Statement: 'Our commitment is to provide students with a structured educational service within a safe, positive and accepting learning environment. Individualised programs will cater for the social, emotional, academic, communicative and independence needs of the students. We aim to prepare students for the opportunities, experiences and responsibilities of life.' Creaney Education Support Centre offers placement for children who have been assessed as being eligible. Students have the opportunity to be transported to and from school on a contract bus, providing they live within an approximate radius of fifteen kilometres of the ESC. Creaney Education Support Centre was established in 1986. It is located on site at Creaney Primary School which provides students with many opportunties to integrate. All teaching staff at the Centre are qualified to teach students with special needs and are supported by education assistants and a part-time registrar. Creaney ESC currently has five classes for teaching students with special needs and students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Three of the classes are located at the Centre, with two of the classes located at the primary school. Four of the classes have been specifically set up for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with a maximum of five students in each class. Each class is staffed with a teacher and two education assistants. This high staff-student ratio allows the ESC to run programs specific to the learning needs of students with ASD. Creaney ESC provides learning opportunities with a 'future focus' on the employment and accommodation environments for its students when they finish their schooling. The skill requirements of these settings are also incorporated into the student's learning. Creaney ESC also runs a structured play program, which caters for the social learning needs of its students. The students are taught the specific skills involved in play and social interaction at recess and lunch times. In 2007, the Centre commenced an Early Intensive Intervention program. The aim of the program is to equip students with the applicable skills for entry into a mainstream Year 1 classroom. The program is based on Discrete Trail Training and is appropriate for kindy and pre-primary students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Global Developmental Delay. There is a fulltime teacher and four education assistants associated with this program. Pre Primary students attend Creaney ESC for two days a week, and their local school for three days a week. The teacher and education assistants work in conjunction with the 'home' primary schools to continue the student's academic and social programs. In consultation with parents, ESC staff, the school psychologist and therapists each student has an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) formulated to best cater for their needs. In addition to reporting on the IEP to parents each semester, various methods of reporting to parents are utilised throughout the year. The delivery of the alternative curriculum is the responsibility of the ESC teachers and is based around the objectives set out in the IEPs and the learning styles of the students in the class. Students are generally instructed in small groups of three to five, however, whole class and one-to-one instruction is incorporated into each class program. Education assistants work under the direction of the teachers and are regularly responsible for carrying out some of the teacher-directed small group work. Some students participate in Discrete Trail Training. ESC students are integrated into the primary school classes (homerooms) for varying lengths of time depending on their individual abilities and needs. ESC students are integrated into their 'homeroom' in the afternoon and for special occasions and assemblies. Other ESC students participate in Reverse Integration activities as relevant to their ability level. Reverse Integration lessons occur in learning areas such as art, craft, health, social skills, values education and speaking/listening. To increase the social contact between the students at the Centre, and to 'value add' to the primary school programs (Active Citizenship), the Centre runs a merit select program for the primary students called Play Links. Year 6 and 7 primary school students apply for the program, and work through certificate levels as 'Play Links Monitors'. The PS students are responsible for the management of a structured play station and are taught the principles of positive behaviour management. The students work through four certificate levels, learning Makaton sign language), PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and training a peer. Gaining a place in the program is highly competitive, and primary school students are presented with certificates of attainment at formal assemblies. The Creaney ESC Council comprises four parent representatives, three ESC staff and a chairperson who is currently the principal. This group has been instrumental in determining the direction the Centre has taken over the last few years. Parent service agencies and ESC staff all provide input, which culminates in each student's Individual Education Plan. Many teachers and education assistants who are interested in learning how students with Autism Spectrum Disorder ar taught visit Creaney ESC. If you are interested in visiting the Centre, talking to the staff, or would like further information, please contact the Centre to make an appointment. | ||||

| The staff knowledge and interaction with the students and the parents. The students are always put first! Use of visuals, positive reinforcement and structure helps all of the students with ASD. The Centre strives to provide a means of communication for the students, plus the strucuture, means that inappropraite behaviours are decreased. | It is difficult to gain a placement at this Centre as the maximum is 40 students. The Early Intervention program can only accept 4 Kindy and 4 PP students due to funding and the intensity of the program. | This is a Centre that truly listens to parents and meets the needs of the students. It caters for Early Intervention through Primary and even follows through to high school placements at Duncraig SHS ESC (ASD specific classes). The staff are so friendly and welcoming - it is just so nice to find a school that caters so well for their students. | ||
