Formerly known as Koorilla Education Support Centre, the Learning Centre shares a site with Coolbellup Community School. The Centre's learning areas are integrated within the Primary School's buildings, with the addition of therapy rooms and specific disabled facilities. The Centre has been providing specialist services in Coolbellup since 1985.

The Centre's administration is located within a shared administrative building with meeting room facilities and a shared reception area. Staff have work areas within the classrooms and wet areas providing appropriate teaching spaces.

The Centre provides educational programs for students with high support needs and range of disabilities including intellectual disability, Autism, Down Syndrome & Cerebral Palsy - the common factor for enrollment is intellectual disability.

An individual education program is provided for each student in both small learning groups and integrated settings. A range of teaching groups operate both within year level classes and cross set educational groups. School priority areas focus on communication, academics and basic functional skills to aid independence. Our programs are underpinned by the belief that all students can learn in supportive environments.

A number of Learning programs are run within the centre and a diverse range of strategies are employed to deliver these programs. Specific programs such as Direct Instruction reading are delivered in cross set groups. Specialist programs to meet the needs of students with Autism, communication and other impairments are also catered for.

All staff at the Centre are specialist trained in the area of Special Needs education and work in partnership with service agencies such as Therapy Focus, W.A. Institute for Deaf Education, The Centre for Inclusive Schooling's Autism Intervention Team & Visiting Teacher Service and the Vision Impairment Service.

The close working relationship between the Primary school and the Centre is a unique feature of the campus. Students from the Centre are provided with a range of integration opportunities with their mainstream peers. Integration is a negotiated program based on the individual needs of students and their families and is supported by staff from both schools and resourced appropriately by the Centre.

Education Support staff provide support to the primary school during integration programs and support some 'at risk' students from the primary school for specific learning areas such as intensive reading/language programs.

The Coolbellup Campus shares both a P & C and a School Council comprising of representatives from both schools parent bodies and teaching staff. The Centre's principal is a member of both groups and currently chairs the School Council.

Parents are an integral component in the school community and meet with teachers twice a year to help devise their child's educational program. Due to the nature of the student's disabilities and behaviour, parent contact is often individualised and maintained on a very regular basis. Parent school relationships are very positive as the Centre prides itself on open two way communications. Regular surveying of the school community provides additional opportunities for feedback, review and change.

The school site has a well defined Managing Student Behaviour Policy and a good reputation in this area. Student's requiring additional behaviour support have this provided via their Behaviour Management Plans which are devised and written in collaboration with parents and interagency support as appropriate. Staff are well trained in this area participating in many professional development opportunities to increase their skill and knowledge base.

The School Improvement Plan contains outcomes for the Centre's priority areas as well as plans for the improvement in the eight areas evaluated as part of the Quality Assurance process. The Centre has its own procedures for gathering data about school performance and an Annual Report is available to any interested community member.

The Centre is always open for prospective parents to view our programs - making an appointment to view the school and meet with the principal is encouraged.
