| Challis Early Childhood Education Centre is a Level 4A, school situated on a shared site with Challis Primary School and Challis SPER Centre. The ECEC educates students from Kindergarten to Year 2. The two schools share a main reception area where they operate independently with their own Principal. There is close liaison between the two administrations and staff expertise is utilised across K-7. The following facilities are also shared between the two sites: library, staffroom, assembly area, canteen and playground. The school is a cluster design built in the early eighties and has an open layout. In 2005 there were two Kindergartens, three Pre-Primaries, three Year One and three Year two classes in operation as well as a Yr 1/2 Boys Class that was trialled. In response to parent demand, one Kindergarten class operated on four half day sessions and the other class offered two full days. The two Education Support Units that previously were in operation, closed in 2005 due to fewer numbers of children with special needs. By its nature, Challis ECEC focuses on Early Childhood strategies and innovations that produce a unique environment, staffed by experienced and motivated early childhood educators who are specialists in their area. Challis ECEC has 18 teaching staff who have a wide range of teaching experience. Two staff with a fractional time allocation cater for Physical Education and Art. Challis ECEC has 16 non teaching staff comprising of: - 2 x Kindergarten assistants - 3 x pre primary assistants - 5 x special needs assistants - 1 x school officer - 1 x Yr 1/2 assistant - 1 x library assistant - 1 x Registrar - 1 x AEIO - 1 x school promotion officerOver the past few years, Challis ECEC has had major success in the following areas: - Introduction of Parent 'n Play Centre (Winner of Canning Excellence in Education Award 2006 for Customer Service.) - Development of a marketing strategy to raise the school profile. - A teacher was a finalist in the prestigious 'Sangora Award' which recognises excellence in the area of Early Childhood Teaching. - Selection to participate in the Australian Early Development Index (AEDI) data collection. - Production of whole site musical to celebrate the school's 30th anniversary.
