| Cassia Education Support Centre is on the same campus as Cassia Primary School in South Hedland. It is one of two Education Support Centres in the Pilbara, and therefore, also acts as a resource centre for country and remote schools. The student population fluctuates, as it is located in a mining town with a very transient population. However, in recent years there has been a steady increase in students at the Centre. Cassia Education Support Centre caters for students with intellectual disabilities that range from mild to severe. The Centre provides educational programs to support individual needs of students who are between the ages 5 years and 12 years. These students come from both Port and South Hedland. The School bus brings students to school each morning and transports some students home in the afternoons. Most students return home from their Integrating schools with their siblings. At present we have 24 students at the Centre from pre-primary to year seven, five full-time teachers, a part time music specialist, and the principal. In addition, we have an Aboriginal & Islander Education Officer, nine educational assistants, a part-time library officer, and a part-time registrar. The Centre also attracts the services of a school psychologist, and the School Age Therapy Service which provides physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Staff actively work together to refine a trans-disciplinary approach. All teaching staff are qualified in special education and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Centre. Junior students are at the Centre for the core subjects and then integrate into their home schools. For some, integration may be daily whilst for others it may mean two half hour sessions a week. Our integrated students attend Baler Primary School, Cassia Primary School and South Hedland Primary School. Senior students have a buddy class and integrate into Cassia Primary School at times that are appropriate and beneficial to both schools. This year we are implementing Reading, Number and Individual Education Programmes as our priorities. Students have English, Mathematics, Health and Technology daily with Music, once a week. Swimming is part of the curriculum and is taught in terms one and four of the school year. Other learning areas like Science and Society and Environment are catered for through a cross curricular approach. At Cassia Education Support Centre we respect and value all our students as individuals and cater for them using Individual Education Programs. Hence our curriculum meets the students' needs. Each student is encouraged to work at his or her own pace. Multi-aged groups and cross-setting are key features at the Centre. In addition we are conscious of the fact that not all children come to school with the same values and foundations for learning. We ensure that the learning at the Centre is culturally appropriate, inclusive and supportive. The year 2007 sees all students engaging in Aboriginal Cultural Studies. The Centre has an active School Council and is looking at re-establishing the P&C Association. Cassia Education Support Centre is very well resourced and has a positive, hard working atmosphere.
