Belridge Education Support Centre (ESC) provides an integrated educational program for students primarily from the West Coast Education District. The Centre is a partner school on the Belridge Senior High School (SHS) campus. We draw students primarily from Beldon ESC, Joondalup ESC, Eddystone ESU, neighbouring Primary Schools that have students with disabilities in mainstream and overseas.

The Belridge SHS commenced in 1991 and opened with one Education Support Unit class. In 1994 the size of the Unit increased and it became an Education Support Centre. Since 1997 enrolments have been over 50 students per year with current numbers at over 86 students.

The Centre is an integral part of the host school, Belridge Senior High School, and is built to a sub school design. The ESC classrooms are purpose built for an integrated model and students move around the school along with SHS students.

There are sixteen teaching staff in the Education Support Centre. The average teaching experience at Belridge ESC is over 20 years and the majority of teaching staff are of permanent status. Seven teachers hold Senior Teaching status with all teaching staff being further qualified as Special Needs Educators. All teachers have undergraduate degrees, one staff member holds a Doctorate and two have Masters of Education degrees.

Non-teaching staff include a full time Level 4 Registrar, 1 day School Officer, 1 day Library Officer and 15 FTE Education Assistants. All Education Assistants are fully qualified and registered with the Department of Education and Training and all have Level 3 status. In addition, all have Senior First Aid Qualifications as well as four holding the Bronze Medallion for Life Saving. Education Assistants undergo regular professional learning programs similar to teachers.

The Centre currently consists of a Principal's office/Deputy Principal's Office/Registrar's office in the central administration block, seven three-quarter sized classrooms incorporated in four different Learning Areas, one demountable classroom equipped with full kitchen, two disabled toilets and bathroom facilities, staff study/small IT room and resource room. We are currently developing a new purpose built Independent Living Facility on site. In addition, we are involved with the Learning with Information and Communication Technology Schools Project and are in the initial implementation stages this year. This project will further enhance the learning experiences and outcomes for our students with special needs.

Students are integrated according to individual learning needs. The Focus Groups in Years 8-10 have higher needs and less integration, Year 8, 9, 10 students have up to 50% integration and students in Senior Classes take extensive Vocational Education Training, Workplace Learning Courses, Technical and Further Education (TAFE) courses and some integrated classes, depending on needs.

At Belridge Education Support Centre we are committed to maximising the educational achievement of all students, promoting acceptance and tolerance of individual differences in self and others, and encouraging open and positive communication with all stakeholders. Students are consistently given clear guidelines for appropriate behaviour at school and behaviour management strategies are implemented in a positive, rational and professional manner in collaboration with parents. Staff are encouraged to attend relevant, ongoing professional development sessions and to take an active part in decision making at the Centre.

More details about the Education Support Centre can be found on the Senior High School website at; http://www.belridgeshs.wa.edu.au/esc/ This website address will be changing shortly when our own website comes online. We will provide an update when that happens on our School Profile (here).
