2006Avonvale Education Support Centre is an educational facility for students with intellectual and adaptive impairments. Its purpose is to provide an environment where all students may attain their full potential in both academic subjects and independent living, enabling them to take their places as full and equal members of society.

Avonvale Education Centre is located north of the Avon River in the wheat belt town of Northam, which is 100 kilometres east of Perth. The school's catchment area includes the town of Northam and the surrounding towns of Toodyay, Clackline, Bakers Hill, Wundowie and Goomalling.

The centre caters for primary age students with the current enrolments for 2006 being 12 students.

Avonvale ESC in partnership with AvonvalePrimary School has offered students who have been identified as educational support students an opportunity to attend their local school with the emphases on inclusivity.

Avonvale Education Support Centre has the emphasis on Individual Education Plans and skill development in the morning sessions and integration opportunities within the mainstream school in the afternoon sessions.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
*Therapy Programs - we are fortunate to be visited by a Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist provided through Therapy Services each fortnight. The therapists assess students and implement programs in collaboration with teachers and a therapy assistant.

*LOTE - Students attend Noongar with their integrated class

*100 School Project - the Centre is one of 100 schools to pilot the implementation of a state initiative to get computers access to all students, this will mean extra resources and professional development for teachers to prepare students for the ever changing technological world.

STAFFING
Staffing for 2006 comprises the Principal and 2.8 FTE
The rest of the staff compromise of 6 non-teaching staff all who are employed on part time basis these include Education Assistants, and a Library Officer, part-time Registrar and a gardener shared with the Avonvale Primary School.

PHYSICAL RESOURCES
The Avonvale Education Support Centre shares the same grounds as Avonvale Primary School and has a purpose built centre with 3 well-equipped classrooms able to facilitate a wide range of activities from formal skills development to physical education and cooking.

PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
Parents of students attending Avonvale Education Support Centre are valued as an important resource and as educational partners. Parent attend the school for meetings with teachers and the Principal to complete a collaborative Individual Education Plan for their child twice a year, which forms the directions for each student's learning outcomes and enables parents to help and support the school through their activities at home.

Parents are also represented on the School Council, which meets once a term.
