Yuluma Primary School, in Innaloo

Details on this primary school

Yuluma Primary School Innaloo Western Australia

Make:
Verdict - quite positive rating.

Compare with all other primary schools.
Yuluma Primary School evolved through the Local Area Education Planning (LAEP) process when the Birralee Primary School closed at the end of 1996 and amalgamated with North Innaloo Primary School in new buildings on the North Innaloo site in Ambrose Street. Because of this, the new school is situated in a park-like setting with many mature shade trees and grassed areas complemented by paved walkways and gardens.
The school was renamed 'Yuluma' Primary School to reflect Aboriginal heritage in the area and was officially opened on 22 October 1997.

The catchment area for the school is the suburb of Innaloo, which has a strong community base.

The school has an experienced staffing profile that has embraced a professional learning environment. The staff profile consists of Principal, Deputy Principal and seventeen teaching staff including part time and full time personnel. Fourteen non-teaching staff, including a registrar, school and library officers, teacher assistants and gardener provide support to the teaching staff.

The School Council consists of the Principal and eight elected representatives - three from the school staff and five from the community, and an active P&C Association supporting the school and its programs.

The school is well resourced. For example, in the area of Information and Computer Technology (ICT) a local area network of some 40 workstations is available to both students and staff. It allows for administrative and curriculum functions with administrative access for staff, and is currently undergoing an upgrade.
Internet access is available to all users with an agreed code of conduct for usage. It works well with the integrated and interrelated approach to learning articulated in the Curriculum Framework.

Federal funding through the 'Investing in our Schools' program will allow for the completion of airconditioning of all rooms as well as provision of soft-fall below major playground equipment.

Yuluma Primary School has a nine class structure in 2007, which includes Kindergarten, Pre-Primary, and Years 1, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4, 5/6, , 6/7 and 7 and an Education Support Centre. Specialist support is provided through Music, Visual Arts and Languages Other Than English (LOTE - Japanese). Music has always been a strong focus within the school including access to brass, clarinet and guitar tuition through teachers from the School of Instrumental Music.

The school employs two Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers, School Chaplain and Community Liaison Officer to support its commitment to the pastoral care of the school community.
In 2007, the school has received additional funding to support two very important programs, 'Behaviour Management and Discipline' (BMAD) and the 'Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme' (ISAD).

Based on the results of Values Profiling, programs have been introduced as a whole-school approach to embrace the five core values of the Curriculum Framework, which are integrated across the student leadership, peer support and behaviour management programs.
It is this strong emphasis on virtues, complemented by a raft of programs and activities across the school that complement this focus, that provides the baseline for the ethos and purpose of Yuluma Primary School.
