The catchment area of Yangebup Primary School is in a period of transition. In recent years two new schools, at Atwell Primary School and Beeliar Primary School have been built. The local area has an aging population and we are seeing a marked reduction in student enrolments. In 2001 the school was reclassified from a Level 6 to Level 5 school. Since then the school student enrolment numbers have been falling by approximately one class per year. In 2005 eighty year 7 students graduated and 40 students will enter Kindergarten in 2006. This trend is set to continue in the coming years. We are also seeing an increase in Homeswest housing and changes to the socio-economic balance in the community.

The land is semi-rural, bounded by lakes and undeveloped bush land on an undulating landfall. Adjacent is a light industrial area rapidly developing due to its favourable location near the port of Fremantle.

The students are drawn from mainly English speaking backgrounds, although we do have a few families where English is not the first language spoken at home. In 2006 Aboriginal student enrolments make up about 10% of the total enrolment at the school.

Staff are mostly experienced people who exhibit a wide range of skills and talents. Each has extensive experience in education and life. Long serving staff members have a strong commitment to the children and have built up a positive rapport with parents.

The leadership model in the school has been developed to acknowledge and utilize the skills of the staff. There is a strong dependence on learning teams with staff providing leadership. The two deputies play a guiding role over the learning teams and the school plan with clear direction provides the parameters within which the learning teams operate.

There are a number of key programs which support the ethos and direction of the school. The Friendly Schools and Friendly Families program is central to the school ethos and the culture in which the school interacts with the students and their families. It provides students and staff with direction on how to manage difficult behaviour and to develop a positive learning environment.

Our Art Program is a highly valued program that provides students with access to secondary special placement programs. The success rate of students entering such programs in recent years has been very high.

The buildings are in cluster groups with central Library, Music, and Art specialist areas. Building began in 1982, was extended in 1986 and again in 1992 as the population increased. The school has extensive play areas, a large oval and adequate parking facilities. All buildings are in good order.

Our resource centre is supported by a very competent and dedicated Library Officer and teachers who ensure this is a well-utilised and managed resource. The automated system was recently upgraded and computer terminals are linked to the Internet. The school has a very skilled specialist teacher in the Information, Communication and Technology learning area. This teacher manages a well equipped Learning Technology Laboratory. All classes have computers which are linked to this network.

The school motto of 'Pride and Achievement' is exemplified by the pride children take in wearing school uniform. There is also a strong belief among the Yangebup School community that Yangebup children perform well in social settings, during games competitions with other schools and in the academic areas of WALNA, MSE and year 7 scholarships. An innovative Parliament System provides many opportunities for students to display leadership and self-responsibility.

The school is a very pleasant place in which to work. The non-teaching staff has excellent commitment to the school routines and new initiatives. The parents are supportive of school programs and initiatives. The Parents and Citizens Association is an enthusiastic group who operate in a positive manner, keen to provide the best for all children in the school.

Overall:
Such a caring school, where staff are really interested. They have a lot of long term, dedicated teachers, as well as a good mix of newly qualified bringing a great balance. Jane Lowther, the deputy head, takes a real interest in the special need pupils. They will aim to cater to the need of the individual, rather than just the group - being at times incredibly flexible. Academics is important, but they also focus on a lot of aspects of the child's character too.Depending on your perspective - mixed year classes.A school that cares and tries to help. Not afraid to change things if they aren't working. Some great new building work has just been finished, with other projects in the pipeline. A P&C that is committed to raising funds to improve things further.
