ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Our Purpose
Is to recognise the uniqueness of each individual and to develop each child's potential academically, socially, culturally, creatively and physically so as to become an effective and confidant member of a changing society.

Nature of the School
The school is situated to the south east of Fremantle, south of South Fremantle SHS and Challenger TAFE. The School Community is very diverse with a number of children being of ethnic origin. In saying that most children were actually born in Australia. The catchment area is made up of different components. Parts are housing some 30 years old and there is lots of redevelopment with some of this being newer Homeswest housing. There is also a good percentage of rental accommodation in the area. The nature of the school is changing with the redevelopment in this area and as the long-standing family residents move out of the area. The school receives special funding under the Commonwealth Literacy and Numeracy Program, Family Links and Behaviour Management and Discipline Programs.
The children are friendly, open, courteous and display good manners. The parents are supportive and a core group is very involved and focused upon the development of the school through the P&C and School Council.

Programmes Offered
The school employs Drama, Music and Visual Arts specialists. Italian is taught to all children Yr 2-7. Selected children in Yr 6/7 take part in the Instrumental Music programme at South Fremantle SHS. Selected children in Yrs 5-7 attend a selection of Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) courses in various neighbouring schools.
This year our 'Getting it Right' Numeracy -strategies for improving numeracy were implemented from K-7. The success of this program across the school was reflected in improved Western Australian Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (WALNA) Data.
2004 saw a focus on Values Education with a support teacher employed two days a week to work with all classes across the school. Classroom teachers plan specific, short term Teaching and Learning Adjustments (TALAs) to address specific objectives for children at risk.

Overall:
Winterfold makes content accessable to all children. They instill in the children a lifelong desire to learn. I attended Winterfold and the teaching staff were so unbelievable that as a result- I am a teacher today. That every child in Australia can't attend Winterfold :o)I am indebted to this school and public education.
