The town's population is approximately 9,000 people with the infrastructure based around the coalmines and power stations. The town offers a wide range of services, has a variety of strong sports clubs and is largely surrounded by state forest providing additional recreational opportunities. The town has three other government primary schools, a senior high school a TAFE college and a catholic primary school. The school is located in a low social economic area, which is mainly Homeswest housing. The buildings were built in the 1950's with it being a traditional linear style. An early learning centre has been developed with the assistance of a K conversion grant. Two traditional classrooms have been converted and now cater for all Kindergarten, Pre Primary and Year One students. The school also has a library resource centre housed in a double transportable unit, an art/craft room and a new undercover assembly area. Another classroom has been converted into a wet area with cooking facilities. Walls have been removed between two pairs of classrooms to facilitate a more colaborative teaching style.
