Williams Primary School Williams Western Australia

Make:

Compare with all other primary schools.
Williams Primary School is the heart of the town of Williams. The families of the students and the wider community have great pride in their school.

Williams has a Shire population of approximately 1000 people and a well established town centre which spreads to semi-rural and residential blocks. The Albany Highway separates the sporting facilities - football club and oval, pool, bowling, hockey and tennis clubs - from the residential and service side of town.

With a good all-round farming climate the Williams area produces a wide variety of crops and animal produce.

The school staff actively pursues a range of change strategies to ensure the most effective curriculum possible is delivered to the children. Much of the school planning is undertaken in collaborative committee structures and through the School Council.

The School is strongly focused on a number of educational issues including
- Outcomes Focused Education
- Information Technology as a Learning Tool
- Addressing the needs of 'At Risk' children
- Improving Literacy and Numeracy
- Implementing Cooperative Learning strategies into the classroom.
- Parents as Partners in Education.

We currently have a specialist Physical Education, LOTE (French) and Performing Arts teacher. Most years the school performs a school production, which is a unique opportunity for the children to learn theatre arts skills and to perform in front of the community. The school has a great reputation around the district for its theatre arts programme and the high level of performances that we present.

Williams is an active and energetic community. The P&C Association is very supportive of the school and has generated significant funds through various activities to assist our educational programs. The School has a School Council, Finance Committee, the Arts Committee and Grounds Committee, which meet regularly.

The School is a traditional brick 'U' shaped layout surrounding a netball and two basketball courts. All classes open onto verandahs. There are 101 students enrolled at the school (2004). Having once been a District High School we have many specialist rooms including

- Music Room equipped with a piano, organ and audiovisual gear.
- Art Room equipped with clothes dryer, store and sinks.
- Maths/Science Room equipped with sinks.
- LOTE
- Small group teaching areas.

In 1999 the Undercover Assembly Area was built on the southern side of the courts. This facility includes a Sports Storeroom, Gardener's Storeroom and Canteen. The school has a well resourced library, which is fully automated. The library has a support person part-time. The library also has a bank of five computers linked to the Internet and has satellite television. A significant number of computers are also located in classrooms, which are all networked to the library server.

The pre-primary centre was relocated into the main school buildings at the end of 2000 due to declining enrolments. From 2002 we have offered a K/P/1 class in the new Early Childhood Centre.

The grounds of the school have undergone significant development including the establishment of a grassed oval and playground equipment upgrade. The school also has a hockey oval, two cricket practice nets, a cricket pitch and two tennis courts.
