| Wickepin Primary is a rural Level 3 School that opened on the 10th October 1911 and is situated 37kms east of Narrogin in the Upper Great Southern section of the state. Wickepin is better known as the home of Albert Facey whose autobiography 'A Fortunate Life' was recently named as one of the top ten books in an ABC program, 'My Favourite Book.' Wickepin is also well known for farming with merino sheep and cropping. The school draws its students from a wide area with the majority of students travelling in from farms each day by bus and a relatively smaller percentage of the children living in the town itself. Wickepin Primary is staffed with a Principal and three full-time teachers. Various other teaching staff are employed throughout the year through the school's Salary Pool to help support a variety of programs on offer. A Languages Other Than Engilsh (LOTE Indonesian) teacher is shared with two Narrogin schools. The teaching staff are supported by a positive group of non-teaching staff including a Registrar, Library Officer, Education Assistants, Gardener and two Cleaners. All staff are highly motivated and work as a united team to ensure quality teaching and learning is available to all of the children. The school facilities include two rows of lineal classrooms which incorporate three classrooms, Library, Multi-Purpose Room, Staff Room and Administration area. Three sheds within the grounds store Physical Education equipment, spare furniture and the Gardener's equipment. The beautifully maintained gardens are a feature of the school with everyone taking a lot of pride in the upkeep of the grounds. A special 'quiet garden,' gazebo, fruit garden and barbecue area is surrounded by lawns, an Undercover Area and a dry oval. The school community's pride in the grounds were well rewarded in 2004 with the school being named 'best kept Non-Residential Property' by the local Tidy Towns Committee. With the student numbers sitting steadily around 60, the classes are developed in the following way: Year K/PP Year PP/1/2 Year 3/4 Year 5/6/7 The specialist areas of teaching change every year depending on the talents of staff. The allocation of Priority Country Area Program (PCAP) funding also supports staff by assisting with opportunities to go on excursions, develop programs such as the 'Virtues Project' and cater for the geographical isolation of the school as a whole. Wickepin Primary is strongly supported by the local Shire, a very active P&C Association and an eager School Council. All of these groups work with the school staff to provide exceptional resources and facilities to the children to ensure that they have the same opportunities as those children in bigger regional and city centres. All in all, Wickepin Primary is itself, 'A Fortunate Place', with a positive and capable workforce, engaged and happy children and a supportive and active parent body. | ||||
