| West Northam Primary School is a Level 4 Primary school in the Midlands District. It is situated at the top of Habgood Street overlooking the town of Northam and the surrounding countryside. It has some of the best views in town The focus of the school's ethos is the well being of all. Students are provided with opportunities to achieve the highest standards of learning that they are capable of. We all strive to be .. The Achieving Kind, The Learning Kind and The Community Kind There are approximately 135 children from K-7 attending West Northam. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and family structures. In 2007 46% of our students are Aboriginal. The school operates 4 full time classes, a well equipped Pre-Primary and one Kindy unit. The special Kaadadjiny Kindy Unit is supported by the Education Department's Aboriginal Education Unit and is part of the Best Start Program. The unique onsite MOASH building is extensively used by the school, community groups and outside agencies. The dedicated and highly professional staff are all committed to educating the children in their care with kindness and compassion. The AIEO's are key members of the school team. They perform a vital role in community liaison, behaviour management and assist with the delivery of learning programs. There is a whole school team focus on behaviour management and the success of this is largely due to the whole school community understanding the agreed responsibilities, the clear guidelines and the codes of behaviour for all. The highly successful Bounce Back Program, which the school applied for and received a National Safe Schools Grant to fully support the implementation of this program, is now in its fourth year. The program is specifically aimed at improving children's resiliency and self esteem which strongly supports our philosophy of the well being of all. There is a strong focus on strengthening local partnerships. Invitations are extended to parents and family members to visit the school, to celebrate successes and to join the students on special days and for special events which interrelate with the school's educational and social programs. The 'Challenge Walk' is a day when all students invite their parents/caregivers to join them for a walk of up to 10 kilometres in a scenic location. After the walk there is a shared picnic lunch before we all return to school. This is a hugely popular annual event in the school calendar and enables all community members to positively interact with the school in a purposeful and meaningful way.Last year the school celebrated its 100th anniversary. A successful 'Investing in our Schools' funding application meant that we were able to build a replica of the historical original school building on the present school site. This project has been ongoing since 2003 when the P and C rescued the original building from demolition. Some of the original building materials are in the replica. The Open Day to celebrate the 100 years was held on Thursday 30th November, 2006. It was huge success with a large number of ex students and staff attending from across the country. The school has been freshly painted and has a fresh new look. With its unique Noongar LOTE program, ICT Features, Phys Ed Program, the 0..5 Getting it Right Numeracy teacher and 0.5 AEST teacher we offer a safe, caring , culturally inclusive environment where all students can learn and grow. | ||||
