| West Leederville Primary School is nestled in the Perth suburb of West Leederville, between Lake Monger and Subiaco Oval. A significant feature of the school's character is as a place of interaction for the community including local community and business organisations, parents, students and staff. The school celebrated its centenary in 1998 and the buildings are steeped in heritage and maintain a unique character. A former prime Minister of Australia, R.J.(Bob) Hawke attended West Leederville Primary School from 1939 to 1941. Many professional and semi profession families reside within the area. The older houses in the district are being replaced with modern home units to incorporate higher density living. Our buildings are heritage listed and these provide unique character with classrooms that surround the traditional school hall. Our history is remembered in the many old photos and shields that are displayed in our 'history' corridor. There is a Kindergarten and purpose built Pre-Primary on site. A large covered assembly area provides a wonderful outdoor facility for the many activities that require outside space but shelter from the sun. Oval and ground space is compact but attractive with the parent community and staff exhibiting a keen interest in its appearance. West Leederville enjoys a strong parent and community involvement, particularly through the support of the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C). The P&C holds a school fete every second year and raises in excess of $20,000. The P&C also raises considerable funds each year by conducting football parking in our grounds during AFL games at Subiaco Oval and through this fund raising has raised over $26,000 in 2006 which has been used in the upgrading of our Library and It facilties to develop an modern integrated Information Resource centre for use by our students. The School Improvment Plan outlines the current school priorities which are established by the School Council and staff, following parent surveys and a review of the school's Management Information System (MIS) data on student performance. Some initiatives include: Focus on Information Communication Technology with the development of the Information Resource Centre (IRC); TAGS extension program for students in a range of areas including literacy, numeracy, computing, music, science and creative thinking; A music specialist to conduct a contemporary music program; A year 4-7 choir where all children participate; A stringed instrument program that caters for selected students conducted by the School of Instrumental Music. Students have the opportunity to learn Cello, Violin or Viola; Languages Other Than English (LOTE) program in Italian for years 3 - 7. This program will be extended to the early years in 2007 with students from PP - year 2 becoming involved in the LOTE program; Year 7 students participating in a Debating program with surrounding schools which is highlighted in Term 4 with the Town of Cambridge Interschool Debate held during Education week; An Artist in Residence Program which is funded by the P&C every second year; An Early Literacy Intervention program based on Phonemic Awareness for year K-1 students; The school has a strong sense of pride reflected in an up-beat School Anthem written by students and composed by the music teacher in 2004. This is sung with tremendous pride on special occasions and at assemblies; The school is recognised in the local community as having students highly skilled in the Arts. with our students regularly successfully entering competitons that focus on all aspects of the Arts; The school traditionally performs exceptionally in Interschool Athletics and Football events; and, A large percentage of our year seven students win ATP Scholarships for High School each year. | ||||
