| West Greenwood Primary School, located in the northern suburb of Greenwood, is approximately seventeen kilometres from the central city of Perth. The school was established in the seventies and is conveniently located adjacent to the Mitchell Freeway and next door to Greenwood Senior High School with whom the school shares close links. An increasing number of people are seeking housing in Greenwood which is a well established, garden suburb offering a wide range of facilities including shopping centres, parks, public transport, a very good public high school, a local hotel and many churches and community organisations. The school sits within natural gardens and gum trees and the buildings are surrounded by an attractive parkland setting. Covered walkways provide shelter between the buildings which are are all air conditioned. The school has specialist areas for media, art/craft, science and music/drama. At the north eastern boundary, The Help Save the Planet Club looks after the only remnant of natural bushland in the area. The school is fully networked and has a modern and fully automated resource centre, which is the hub for information and computer technology. The resource centre is also used for school community activities including meetings, functions and workshops. Linked to the resource centre is an undercover assembly area. This facility also houses a canteen that operates five days per week and is administered and maintained by the Parents and Citizens' Association. The school shares usage of a swimming pool with the local high school. The school provides an educational program that caters for a broad spectrum of abilities, needs and interests of students. The school has strong links with parents and the local community and the school motto is - 'Friends Growing Together'. The school purpose states: 'to provide a learning environment that facilitates the academic, social and personal growth of all children in the school'. In an evolving information age, the school has the responsibility to ensure all students are engaged learners and strives to provide a curriculum which is designed to include and serve the needs of all. The school features a friendly and dedicated Parent and Citizens' Association (P&C) who meet on the third Tuesday of each month. P&C projects continue to support the school's funding and planning by providing extra playground facilities, managing the canteen, promoting and running the school uniform shop, providing various curriculum area resourcing support and assisting with classroom support. The P&C communicates with parents through the school's newsletter. There are twenty teaching staff members and eight support staff for three hundred and sixty (360) students. The staff at West Greenwood Primary School exhibit a strong team ethic and work collaboratively to secure the best possible learning outcomes for all students. All staff have a strong commitment to curriculum improvement and school improvement planning. Shared leadership is a strength of the staff, with an emphasis placed on maintaining knowledge and skills through embracing the sharing of professional learning. All professional learning is done through an action research base and monitored through Developmental Learning Team Leaders in the junior and upper areas of the school. West Greenwood Primary School students generally achieve well when judged against their peers in similar schools and do well on advancement to high school. As part of the Curriculum Improvement Program (Phase Two) there has been a heavy emphasis on teaching students how to think about their thinking. Higher Order Thinking Skills are a priority and will continue to be for the next few years. Regular courses are offered to parents which mirror staff professional learning so that they can continue to strengthen the learning partnerships forged by the school. The School Council is well informed on current teaching practices and supports the work of teaching and non-teaching staff. The Council monitors the School Development Plan and assists in reviewing and updating school policies as required. | ||||
