| Wembley Primary School is located 10 minutes from the centre of Perth, on the western edge of the city. The school is located on a major through road backing into the residential community. There is an underpass to ensure students from the northern residences can access the school safely. Students and their parents are encouraged to walk or cycle to school. The local school area provides for privately owned homes and low-rise rental accommodation. Established in 1936, the school comprises old and new buildings in linear design. The latest extension completed in 2000 allows the school to operate with a total of twelve permanent classrooms, three temporary classrooms, purpose-built library, art and music rooms as well as an administration area. All on-site classrooms are air-conditioned. Two enclosed verandahs provide space for practical activity classes along with an undercover area. The undercover area houses the canteen that operates three days a week. Just off site there are two purpose-built Pre-primary facilities. In 2004 one centre operates with 40 Kindergarten (pre-Compulsory) students. Students at Wembley Primary School are motivated to learn and are supported in this by supportive and interested families and experienced staff. There are 420 students from Years Kindergarten to Year 7 with class sizes ranging from 20 to 31. Our students are multicultural with some 80a0of the school population having been born in Australia, England or New Zealand and the remaining 20a0having come from other countries. The Kindergarten (4year old) and Pre-primary (5 year olds) programs are located close to the school, on the side of the school oval in Jersey St. The teaching staff are experienced and are supported by a competent and hard working support staff and an active school community. Staff have a high level of expertise in a spread of areas and continually strive to improve their professional skills and abilities. They are dedicated to ensure that students receive a sound, balanced education. Teachers utilise First Steps and the WA Literacy Net and work with support staff to ensure a sound Students At Educational Risk program and extension program (Talented and Gifted Students, TAGS & Primary Extension And Challenge, PEAC). The extension programs are offered on a term basis both within and outside of the school, with the PEAC program being offered on a District level. This program is offered to Year 5-7 students who reach a district level on specific tests given in Year 4. To accomplish pedagogical shift in classrooms, teachers work in collaborative groups to come to a shared understanding of the Principles of Teaching, Learning and Assessment as applied to classroom practices. Staff collaboratively plan, monitor and assess in Learning Teams. There is a K-3 team, a Year 4-5 team and a Year 6-7 team. Staff have regular weekly meetings in these teams. Parents are represented in an effective Parents and Citizens' Association (P&C) that has contributed significantly to playground maintenance, facilities development and the Canteen. The P & C is responsible for the uniform shop which makes school uniforms available for purchase. Members of the P&C are also actively involved in the Safety House committee and the canteen, which operates three days a week and focuses on providing healthy foods. The school has an elected School Council consisting of the Principal, three staff, three parents, a P&C representative and two community representatives. Members of the School Council are elected for a term of two years and take part in setting of general policy directions, objectives and priorities of the school, the financial arrangements to achieve these, evaluating school performance and formulating codes of conduct. The School Council also determines school dress code, promotes the school in the community and approves charges and contributions. Students also have a council consisting of eight senior students and led by the elected Head Boy and Head Girl. Languages Other Than English (LOTE) is mandatory in WA State schools from Years 3-10. This school offers French in Years 1-7. The aim is to develop competence in the language along with developing general skills in learning a language. Much is also made of the cultural appreciation side of the program. LOTE assists greatly in students become more proficient English users. Music is another vital part of our learning program offered through our music specialist in a specialised music room. The school has a specialised art room with kiln. Art is taken across the school by classroom teachers who provide a general teaching/learning programme to all students in Years K-7 during the course of the year. Computers play an important role in the school's learning program with all classes networked throughout the school and connected to the Internet and a computer laboratory. The library continues to be the hub of learning whether on-line or in reality at the school. The library is fully automated and a specialised program provided by a full-time Library Resource teacher. The Physical Education/Sport program provides the healthy balance to the academics with a dynamic program of weekly sport and regular sports clinics. There are many aspects to the school's program that further develop the students including; a Public Speaking program that culminates in a School Public Speaking competition, an FM radio program, a conservation program focussed on the Waterwise and Greening Australia programs and our Peer Mediation program. These along with our specialist areas make the learning program at Wembley Primary School diverse, dynamic and fun. | ||||
