| Wandering Primary School is a unique small rural school situated 130kms SE of Perth. It is located near state forests and within a farming area that includes sheep, cereal crops, hay making and wine production. The weather can be quite extreme and the town regularly features having the lowest minimum winter temperatures - hence our school logo features the words: ' Cold temperatures, warm hearts'. In summer temperatures tend to be in the high thirties. Formal education commenced in Wandering in 1869 to'instruct the 20 - 30 children running about the bush in a semi state of savagery'. (F. Watts) Originally the government school was established in 1875 further down the hill at a cost of 119 pounds, but abandoned due to it being too low and too wet. The 'new' school-building was set up as a one-classroom weatherboard school in 1924 and internal additions and alterations have been carried out over years to provide more suitable facilities for the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students. Over the 2003/2004 period the school has been able to enjoy a new Administration Block, new Toilet Block and new early childhood upgrade. These changes have improved the working environment of the teaching staff and learning environment of the students. 2005 saw the commencement of Wandering Primary School's bus run. This reduces the burden on parents to transport children to and from school each day. Any students living 5 kms or more from the school can access the school bus. In 2005 Wandering Primary School received an 'Investing In Our Schools' grant for $50 000 to add a reticulated and grassed oval to the amenities. This was achieved in 2006, with a large water storage tank and a sports equipment shed on the edge of the oval. The students are from a variety of backgrounds - town and farm - and the community has enjoyed a population growth spurt, which has resulted in increased student enrolments for the school. The school has an extensive and effective Students at Educational Risk policy which achieves good results. The 'Students At Educational Risk' policy is built firmly on the team relationship developed with the children and their parents. The staff of Wandering Primary School is a happy mix of experience and youth, fulltime and part time personnel. Although not a large staff, there is a strong collegiate bond, and staff members are very supportive of each other. Their hard work and dedication has resulted in innovative and interesting learning programs being provided for the students.Although relatively isolated, strong collegiate bonds are fostered with other near by schools. Boddington District High School, is 34kms to the west, Pingelly Primary School, 60 kms to the east, Williams Primary School, 60kms to South, and the Narrogin schools are 74kms south-east. Staff regularly attend PD sessions that have been organised with other schools within the Narrogin District to ensure strong networks are developed with other teachers and to overcome the problem of professional isolation. District Office staff provide excellent PD sessions at the school and support staff in implementing the Curriculum Framework and 'Outcomes and Standards Framework'. Due to a strong PD emphasis staff members have taken on Department of Education and Training priorities and initiatives and maintain high professional standards. | ||||
