Walpole Primary School was established in 1954 when the farm-based schools closed to form one town school. Since that time, student numbers have fluctuated and currently there are 90 students attending.

Walpole is a predominantly a farming/timber/cottage industry community surrounded by national parks that is very supportive of the school. There is a high expertise base in the community with many people willing to share with and have input into the school. The school has a very experienced, permanent staff all living locally and a supportive and increasingly active Parents and Citizens Association.

The school grounds are very appealing and well maintained and this contributes to the overall feeling of a caring ethos. There are six teaching areas, three in the main building, with two demountables and an onsite pre-primary. Excellent facilities include a large hall, covered walkways to outer rooms, an excellent room with kiln - ensuring that all curriculum areas are well provided for. A fine new administration block was built in 1994 with a large a reception area, a principal's office, sick room, photocopy room, interview room and a staff room. This has been very well designed to blend well with the character of the school.

The parents and the school community are active and are encouraged to participate in all areas of the school. The school council participates in school development processes and has input into policy development and programs, and the P&C is used as a forum for discussion about educational issues and resourcing.

The isolation of the Walpole community does pose some difficulties for the staff. The school is part of the Albany District and is 120km from that city. It is the same distance to Manjimup where the school has links with others in the Warren Blackwood District for interschool sport, health services and cultural pursuits.

The structure of classes in 2005 are: K/P, Years 1 & 2, Years 3 to 5 and a Year 6/7, with most students progressing to Year 8 in Denmark High School and then going on to board in Albany for Years 11 and 12.
