| Schooling in the Walkaway area dates back to the 1860's. The current Walkaway Primary School has been in its present location in the town of Walkaway since 1966. Walkaway is a small rural town twenty-eight kilometers south of Geraldton. Most of the nearly eighty students at the school are from the surrounding farming districts. Two bus routes service the outlying areas. The school is surrounded by lush gardens, shady trees and green grass. A small number of dedicated and very experienced staff teach the students in a series of multi aged classes. The school enjoys great stability in a quiet and attractive learning environment. Walkaway Primary enjoys a comprehensive range of indoor and outdoor sports and physical fitness facilities. There is an extremely strong emphasis on pastoral care within the school community. Bullying of any description is not tolerated. Children participate in active citizenship by cleaning the local museum, serving food at Companion Day (a special day to thank our seniors) and by singing to the elderly at various functions. Senior students work closely with younger students to build a caring relationship within the school. Walkaway Primary Schools values are based in developing self worth, independence and co-operation. The values we promote, combined with a strong program in Reading, Writing and Mathematics has produced academic results that are well above the Western Australian state educational average in all areas. Our students have gained outstanding awards in many local, state and national competitions. The school has also created learning opportunities in music, drama, technology and the arts. A significant part of the school's operation is based in the area of technology and enterprise and all classrooms are equipped with a networked computer system as well as having a computer room with an additional 30 computers. Included is a system to loan computers to families who do not possess a computer at home. The P&C association have built and maintained many of the facilities at the school including a purpose built library, computer room, a large art and technology shed as well as beautiful gardens and brick paved eating areas. | ||||
