Useless Loop is a very scenic, yet isolated community located approximately 850 km from Perth, and 450 km from Geraldton. The nearest town is Denham, which is 220 km by road. The town has a population of approximately 154 people, 18 of whom are school students. Useless Loop is part of the Shark Bay Salt Joint Venture mining lease and as a result there is restricted access to the community by visitors. Shark Bay Salt supplies services and utilities in the town, with the nearest government agencies based in Carnarvon or Geraldton. The school was established in 1969 as a result of the Shark Bay Salt Joint Venture vision of establishing a community by attracting potential employees and their families.

Useless Loop Primary School caters for students from four-year-old kindergarten through to year seven. The school is part of the Mid West Education District and is serviced by the Mid West District Education Office in Geraldton. Useless Loop is grouped together with other schools in the Midwest region to form the Gascoyne Cluster. This includes Shark Bay, Carnarvon, Gascoyne Junction, Burringurrah and Exmouth. Useless Loop Primary School participates in the Priority Country Areas Program (PCAP) as part of the Federal Government's National Equity Programs in Schools (NEPS). The school is also part of the Remote Teaching Service, which provides financial and leave incentives for the teaching staff and a school vehicle to assist in the operations and program provision at the school.

The school is currently organised in the following manner:
There are two classes:
1) Junior Primary: Kindergarten to Year 2
2) Senior Primary: Year 3 to Year 7

The Pre-primary students attend full time and are catered for in a Rural Integration Program. The school funds additional aide time through PCAP and special purposes grants to assist in catering for the needs of individual students. The children are involved in a daily Fundamental Movement and Physical Fitness program and LOTE via CENTRA an internet program improving interactions with Distance Education teachers.

The school has large grounds with a variety of playing areas including an oval. There are also pleasant grassed and garden areas throughout the school grounds as well as undercover areas to provide protection from the elements. The school building is supplied and maintained by Shark Bay Salt Joint Venture, providing high standards of facilities for staff and students. The school has many teaching resources, including a large number of computers with appropriate software and Internet access available to all students. The recent inclusion of Smartboard technology provides students with access to contemporary teaching and learning media. The school has a fantastic School Council and P & C body to provide consultation and community input.

The school ethos emphasises respect, courtesy and positive work habits and this is well supported by parents and the local community.
