Compare with all other primary schools.
Upper Swan Primary School is situated in the Swan Valley on Great Northern Highway. The school is steeped in the history of the Valley with many of the original families having sent generation after generation of children to the school. In 2005 the school celebrated its 100th anniversary. The school's entrance, through an avenue of deciduous trees and personalised paving bricks highlighting the family history of many of our past students, draws the eye of many prospective parents.

Although an historical school the buildings are all recent. The school consists of five main buildings. The Administration, staffroom and library was built in 1992. The senior block with its five classrooms and unique structure was built in the 1970s. The junior block has seven classrooms, and a central area and purpose built Art Room and was built in 2003. The school's building program has continued into 2006 with an extension to the covered assembly area as well as a bitumen parking area for staff.

Although the school's physical site is away from any defined suburbs, student numbers have grown steadily for the last few years and are expected to continue to rise in the future. One of the school's unique features is that many of the students travel long distances to come to our school. In past years there have been approximately 100 students coming from outside our local area.In 2005 the school added a second Kindy building to the Early Childhood complex, which now consists of two Pre-primary rooms and three Kindy groups in two buildings.

The school operates with 12 classes from Years 1 to 7. There is a system of looping within many year levels as well as collaborative teaching. The new Ellenbrook Secondary College opens in 2007 providing our Year 7 students with two options. The students can continue at Upper Swan or enter to Ellenbrook, which will have a Middle School.

The parent body are presently involved in funding internal changes to the senior block, and developing and increasing the playground equipment with a focus on equipment that will help student learning. The P&C have just finished funding a new patio to the senior block. They also run the school canteen making sure it meets healthy eating guidelines as well as making a profit. This profit is then put back into the school for the benefit of the students.

The school staff is made up of teachers who range in age and experience. There are two Level 3 teachers as well as a number of Senior Teachers. At present the school has a Principal and one Deputy Principal, with the second deputy position rationalised and used for Teacher Leadership positions.

The staff is keen to ensure that children enjoy their schooling. There are programs focusing on self-esteem, instrumental music - guitar, Physical Education, Art and Indonesian. Staff use co-operative learning strategies and inquiry to support student learning.

Besides an involvement in the annual ABC knit-a-thon, the Student Council regularly raise funds for various charities. There are peer mediators in the playground during morning tea and lunchtimes to support students.
The Physical Education teacher has organised sport at lunchtimes and this year run the before and after school 100Club. The library is also open for lunch. Chess is played before school, with a competition being held in Term 3. The Indonesian teacher runs an 'Indo' club during lunchtimes and these students are creating a typical tropical garden outside the Indonesian room.

The school's gardener is also integral to the school's running. Over the years he has worked with many children making wooden toys. This year he is helping students build a metre high dinosaur.

Our motto is 'Onwards' and a recent parent survey indicated that this comment is indicative of how parents feel; 'A lovely school, great teachers and a lovely working environment for the children'. The school operates a small website with suggestions and hints to help parents.
