OUR COMMUNITY

Established in the early 1960's Thornlie Primary School is designed with classrooms built around a quadrangle. Surrounded by many tall eucalypts, it has extensive grounds for students to enjoy. There is a focus of community within the school, with strong partnerships developed between parents, staff and students. Cultural awareness is also a major thrust with an enrolment of 285 students, including 25 Indigenous students and representatives from about forty different ethnic groups.
FEATURES
In 2006 there are eight Primary classrooms, a Kindergarten/Pre- Primary and a Pre- Primary. The site also includes a Library, canteen, covered Assembly Area, Music and Drama Room, LOTE Room, Computer Room, an Art Room, a Parent Meeting Room and an Administrative Building. A Dental Therapy Centre on site caters for students of the school and surrounding suburbs.

OUR STAFF

The school has a staff with extensive experience. The school leadership team consists of a Principal, two Deputy Principals and a Registrar. The school is fortunate to also have five Advanced Skill Teachers (AST's) and two 'Getting It Right' (Literacy and Numeracy) teachers who contribute to supporting colleagues and curriculum development. The support staff team includes a School Officer, a Library Officer, Education Assistants deployed to support students from Kindergarten to Year 7, an AIEO, a School Gardener and team of school-based cleaning staff.
PROGRAMS
The school has a number of programs in place to ensure the positive reinforcement of good behaviour in both the playground and classroom. Apart from gold slips for Faction points, the school has Honour Certificates presented at each fortnightly assembly, recognised in the school newsletter and bumper stickers awarded, Aussie of the Month, and reward events at the end of each term for children who display appropriate behaviour. The school operates specialist programs in LOTE (Italian), Physical Education, Music and Drama. Other programs include Aboriginal Studies/Cultural Awareness, Music-School of Instrumental Studies, Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) Program, Edu-Dance, Getting it Right Literacy and Numeracy, Rainbows, Rock and Water and Scripture.

DECISION MAKING, CONSULTATION AND COMMUNICATION

A School Council operates under the guidelines of the School Education Act (1999) and provides input to policy matters and school planning. Parent and staff representatives on the school council meet once per term. The Parents and Citizens' Association Committee is associated with Breakfast Club, Uniforms, Canteen and fundraising activities. The School Leadership team forms an executive decision making body for the management of the school and is informed by a range of teaching and non-teaching staff. Regular communication is provided to parents/carers through fortnightly newsletters, parent interviews, class updates and the School's Annual Report. Each semester the school reports student progress to parents/carers in a variety of formats on a formal basis.
